Just picked up a FC...need some pointers

One of my buddys friend was moving and he gave me the FC. its non running and non turbo.

the story that i got from him was...he drove it really hard one night, and 2 weeks later it wouldnt start, and it has been sitting on his driveway for over a year.

so i got it home last night, used a jumper cable, and the car cranked. checked for spark and it had spark, the plugs were really fouled, so i changed them today, still nothing.

i did the ghetto compression test by hearing the pst...pst...pst, and it was pretty consistant, so im assuming it has compression, i will do a real compression test tomorrow

im going to put a few gallons of fresh gas probably tomorrow as well.

Any tips on what else should i check for?

thanks, i appreciate it
Cliff

Here's the standard new-owner stuff: http://aaroncake.net/RX-7/newowner.htm
Other than that, I would say wait until you do a proper compression test, and we can go from there. There's no point fixing stuff if its got a bad seal.

The car has been sitting for years, so see this before you try to start it again:

try some atf or somthing to help the build more compression. this could also help stuck apexes too.

Not only that, but ATF does nothing to dissolve carbon and will attack the rubber seals (oil control o-rings and coolant o-rings) in the engine if left too long...

how can i tell if its flooded? the old plugs in there were somewhat wet from the gas, but maybe its the stale gas so it didnt ignite.

ill give it an oil change once the car runs.

my friend has heard a rx7 starting up but he said this car doesnt sound like it has any desire to turn over...maybe ill have to sell my civic to get this car running haha

im leaving for hong kong on wednesday, so tomorrow is my final shot at it until i get back in 3 weeks.

copression tell you somewat. if the walls are washed down with fuel its flooded and you wont get as much compression as normal.

The main thing on a compression test is to look for even pulses. Get someone else to crank it while you hold down the release valve. You should see 3 even pulses per rotor, preferably at least 80-85 each. If its lower, I wouldn't worry too much since its been sitting a long time and possibly flooded. For comparison, the engine dropped in my car had been sitting for 10 months. When I first got it hooked up it had 70-75 on all faces, and after only 50 miles of driving its up to 85-90.

As long as the pulses are even you should be ok. If its super low (anything below about 50-60) then something might be wrong. Just put in some oil and crank it over and see if the compression raises. Again, if its flooded it might take some work to get decent compression, though.

how do you deflood the engine? egi fuse out and gas pedal to the floor and crank? thats what i got out of the faq, not 100% sure though

one more thing, do i put it in the trailing hole or the leading hole?

good news, had one of my friends that has been in rotaries for really long time help me out today.

found out that we had a bad fuel pump. changed it out for another one today...just a random one from my honda that i had laying around and it started up

it started up after we pull started it with my friends truck, it was shooting fireballs everywhere

now it runs but the idle is funky, so once i get back from hong kong everything will be fixed and it should be on the road by febuary

haha, good job on getting it started but it probably wouldn't hurt to get a fuel pump that's well.... made for our cars. Whose to say that the honda fuel pump can withstand the demands of a rotary engine. Maybe it works, i'm just hating on hondas.

You don't need (or want) a Walbro on your NA. If the pump is bad, get a stock replacement.
