Just bought an fc... but need some help

Hi all,

I recently picked up a non-starting 1986 n/a fc shell that had a pretty good body on it, minimal rust but it had been sitting in a field for 5 years without starting. Everything else seemed to be working fine except for the motor. Well, thanks to this forum I did the unflooding trick and boy did it ever smoke like a beeyotch when the engine actually started.

Well... I got the car up on a hoist, checked out the underside and it wasn't too bad except for the exhaust which was missing one tip on the right side and the right muffler was completely rusted through. That's no big deal though... I drove it around and it seemed like it was fine but the tranny whined a lot. I though hmm, no big deal as it has been sitting for a while so I decided to do a complete oil and tranny flush. It was still whining a little bit and my mechanic friend told me that the tranny was on it's way out soon.

Next day... I couldn't get her started again. The engine wouldn't crank, we put it back on the hoist and did the starter tapping thing with the hammer, it started to crank but we soon realized that the starter was pretty much fried and we tried to push start the car... Unfortunately when we did that, the car jerked when it started and the entire exhaust system just fell off and was dragged around for a couple meters until we realized what happened. It appears to have rusted off at the weld to the exhaust manifold.

Well now I have a few questions for you folks:

1) The local junkyards don't have any fc's that are salvageable at the moment but there are a lot of fb's... Would the starter from one work?
2) My friend works for a jdm engine importer that has an s5 t2 tranny sitting in the shop, what would it take to get it into my s4 n/a?
3) I am planning to do a T2 swap down the road (after winter) but I need a new exhaust now. If I buy the RB high-perf exhaust system, can i use the road race header to bolt on to the pre-silencer?

Thanks guys,

A New Rotorhead

If you're just going to do a T2 swap, I wouldn't bother buying a new exhaust system just to throw it away later. Cruise the for sale sections, find a used stock system.

The hi-perf exhaust system is for t2 only but the header is for n/a. I didn't want to buy the n/a exhaust systems. I'm thinking to just sell the header when I'm doing the swap later. I'm just not sure if the header fits into the pre-silencer. The thing is... I kinda need an exhaust right now as I'm missing the entire piece of crap at the moment.
