just bought a '86 rx-7

hey everyone, just bought a rx-7 and have some questions. ever since i was looking for a car when i was 16, i always wanted a tII, but now i can get something close to it. i currently drive a 2001 acura 3.2cl though, but i hope i have more fun with this car because my other car is pretty boring.

i just bought an '86 rx-7 sport w/10000 miles on a pretty new stock engine that was swapped in. it has primer on it and no passenger seat. all the parts are there cept the side mirrors. it also has 17 inch aftermarket rims, what kind? don't know. so far, i think the water pump needs to be replaced because coolant appears to be leaking. what else could it be? also, can someone carfax this car for me? oh yea, i got the car for 600 bucks, think i got ripped? thanks!!!

I'll assume 10000 is supposed to be 100,000.

Sounds like a nice project. $600 isn't bad, especially with a new motor. You'll want to make sure your 5th & 6th ports are working.

Water pump isn't that bad to replace, it's right on the front of the engine, and you won't have to drain the coolant very far to empty it.

I will suggest keeping the Acura around. RX-7s are a blast to drive, but your car is 18 years old, and will probably be spending a bit of time not running. :-) They all do.

What are your plans for it? If you have the money (always the question) you could get it painted, get the seat, mirrors, etc. Otherwise, you've got a decent start to a nice track car.

thanks for the reply russ. nope, the engine only has 10000 miles on it. it's been sitting in a garage for 3 years since the motor was dropped in. the guy had plans to repaint it all and do stuff to it, but never really got around to it. it started up perfect and worked very well gunning it here and there till a lose hose popped off causing fluid to drain and breaking the pump i'm assuming. any more opinions? and can someone hook it up with a carfax?

my plans are to get it smogged, registered, some mirrors and get it running reliably

$600 is awesome for a newly-rebuilt engine with the car! Find out where the coolant is leaking, you might not need a water pump. You should have fun with car, they're easy to work on and fun to drive.
