Check to see if the Steering Is Manual,or Power steering. Is the Power steering pump there? Is it Hooked up to the Rack?.as far as the Transmission Hard to shift into gear:is the clutch "mushy"..does it stick to the Floor?(that means hydraulics need to be looked at.Master and slave cylinder and lines, etc).Have you checked the Fluid level of the Transmission?..does the transmission Make noise?when you push the Clutch in ..When in Neutral does it sound Like Metal grinding.(That would be either a pilot bearing or a throw out bearing)..If you can Ellaborate as much as you can on what is happening,The guys here will be more than willing to help you..and Welcome to the Forum..I hope my Info helps you out.a little!

^ Yes.. with a couple small bends/cuts in the inner steel of the rear of the car. Check http://www.aaroncake.net/rx%2D7/taillights.htm
188k miles on the tranny, yeah.. its gonna shift hard. Its probably time for a rebuild.. Some Redline MT-90 or Royal Purple synthetic oils would really help it out though!
As for the steering.. If its an 86, its probably a manual rack.. that could be normal. Feel lucky.. lots of people want that. However, if its NOT a manual rack (picture of engine bay can confirm), then your power steering isn't working correctly and will need to be fixed or bypassed.
Lock on 1st gear? Sounds fishy to me. Never heard of it. Can you explain better what he said?
