Why do I assume apex seal first? Because it looks hard driven with 180k miles and parts put into it then gave up on because probably saw the rebuild price tag and lost confidence the car could be redone because they probably don't know enough about cars in general to wanna try his or hers hand at it.

And from what I've learned from my first 2nd gen Mazda is that apex seal can blow if you don't take care of the engine I've seen people selling them with140K miles and say apex seal went out on it.

I see it all the time in Idaho wether it be an rx7 or an rx8 people buy them because they are cool at first then when motor problems throw them away like they are junk and don't realize it could have just been vacuum or as simple as fuel filter even just plain carbon build up.

Short story bought my first gen a month ago had some carbon build up in it was really hard to get it going did the normal stuff got it to red line a few times good as new. The motor was rebuilt once before cause of carbon build up the first 108k miles of granny driving.
And sorry for some of my grammar my phone doesn't come with fat finger button options so I can't hit more then one letter and correct them all.

Who knows cause I don't but it just looks like it was teen driven till it could be driven no more. Judging by the kit the exhaust and t2 hood they wanted something fast but didn't know Jack to keep it alive.

And I offered 3 said nope no less then 5 I will do it for that much because it's my loss and no one else's. Its gonna be garaged and torn down then put back together then the motor would just be either redone or swapped over time when or if I feel like I would like to drive it now or wait awhile longer and even if I can't get it running I could sell as parts and try to make back if not more on it.

If you plan on putting it back on the road, call your DMV with the VIN and ask about registration back fees. Those add up quickly and could easily be more than the price of car.

It's not much of a bargaining chip with the yard, but at least you know what you're getting into.

oh and Barkz the reason why I said you were getting snippy with me was because of this first part.

Why assume that? Becuz rx7?
when I read that part I should have just ignored you but I felt like you were treating me like I was some honda guy trying to go turbo on stock internals and saying I push 35psi. but I got what you siad I didn't really make time to point out some other details and I have worked for the last 9 days straight and probably won't stop for another 6 days I only had time to take outside pictures on a lunch break and that was it.

if I didn't work like a slave I would probably be here with new pictures right now. but they are closed to day so oh well.

i didn't really read much of this, but---

a week ago I bought an '89 vert, with 89K original miles. Automatic, blown engine & trans, 2 owner car, from a salvage yard. Car was slated for southamerica export if i didn't pick it up. it's a harbour blue car.

That all said, I paid $971.50 for the car, with it titled in my name, and delivered to my house from a location 3 hours away.

Several years ago I paid $1,000 for a running RX-7, and it still runs to this day. I don't understand why you guys pay so much for something that doesn't even run.

I'm with Landon and Evil (mostly).

With the paintjob and bodywork, and just being a non-running wannabe TII, and who knows what else has been hacked on it, I'd probably pass, if I was looking for a good car to clean up and fix. Now if I was just looking for a car to part out, maybe.

If I didn't have my RX-7 already, and started from scratch with little $, I'd look for an extra clean body with no rust (maybe a southern away from sea and salt area car), low miles, perfectly stock but blown TII, and go from there.

Find a car that is a solid foundation to build on. Best advice I can give a fellow member.

From the pics I would say it a S4 base model due to the 4 lug wheels. All S5 had 5 lugs even if they didn't get the good brakes. Not sure if its worth buying to fix or not as Evil and Landon mentioned because you'll put a lot of money in it, but if you're ok with that it's your call. That said if that's the full Racing Beat exhaust header and all. You could probably buy the car sell the exhaust, S5 tails and hood and make a profit. All parts sold after that are icing on the cake. Though being a base model some desirable parts people want aren't there, brakes and LSD. You may not make very much parting it out either though but once you've sold all the parts your selling you may get a couple hundred from the crusher for the body.

If you're buying the car as a project intended to hit the road, the only thing that matters is the body.
All the other stuff (four lug hubs, etc.) is simple bolt on changes and can be done at your leisure but bodywork is a massive undertaking.
And I'm not talking about paint, I mean rust, dents and similar insults.

IMO, in comparison to bodywork, the mechanical work is almost trivial.

Landon, your experiences don't count. You have like 4 times the parts/cars compared to what a normally obsessed RX7 owner would have.

Well I have been thinking track use more then a road car. I will have to check it out more after 3pm and check more on the exhaust and a little more on the motor.

The one thin I know for sure is if I buy the car there won't be a running motor in it for almost a year or two. The body I didn't see bad rust looked garages most the time but was winter driven a lot with salt lain down for ice when I got pictures I kinda crawled underneath and looked wasn't so bad it should be crushed as for body the paint it self is still good. And I saw maybe 2 dents max that were actually noticeable but are not a problem if anything it looks like it could just be built up take to the track and just overall make an N/A drift missile for the drift track down the street. Either one of those. But road worthy is probably not something this car is anymore and even I can tell overall I still have 2 weeks to think it over so no decision has to be made right now.
