JDM TII arrived - need advise

We got a TII from TigerJapanese (yes, some say they are bad, some say good) yesterday. I have a couple of questions and would very much appreciate your advice:

1) How can I verify it is an S5?

2) How do I know if the ECU is the correct one? Any way to check to see if it's any good?

3) I have the compression check with a traditional compression checker instructions Kaboodled. Any thoughts on checking the compression with the engine on a palette? Can I check it by turning the crank with a ratchet or only with the starter? If the starter, where do you suggest I hook up the battery?

4) Should I pump some Marvelous Mystery Oil thru the plug hole while manually turning it over to lube things up inside, and in particular the apex seals?

This is a NA to T2 and auto to MT5 swap which we'll be doing over Thanksgiving week. Between now and then (and assuming the compression checks ok) are there any other "while its out of the car" maintenance items should do? The turbo spins free. On my list now...

1) Replace all the belts and hoses

2) Rebuild the clutch slave cylinder

3) Replace the seals on the tranny

Got a bunch of other stuff to buy (clutch, drive shaft, hood, pedals, etc). This is my 17 year old's daily driver and I'm not trying to make it a hot rod, but I do want to get it so it can get out of its own way (which the NA/Auto cannot).

thx

Jim

If you have an electrical OMP, it's a s5.

Were almost in the same boat. Im as curious as you are, only thing is that I didnt get an ecu with my motor along with some other missing parts. Beginners luck I guess.

How important is it to replace the seals on your tranny? Where do you find these seals?

Seems like you are on task, get it tuned up, replacing sparks, wires and all. To verify if it is an s5: electric OMP fo sho, and check the AFM, if it is black and has a cone-shaped valve then it's an s5. As for the ECU, check the FSM, it should have the number there.

If you dont replace the old rear tranny seal when you remove the driveshaft there a very good chance you'll leak tranny fluid onto your hot catalytic converter, smoke and a wonderfull smell and you'll slowly coat your undercarriage with it while your transmission eats itself. Ask me how i know

Prob not. My buddy did mine. He put somegrove in the wastegate holes. He also made the wastegate open more buy grinding the top of the wastegate and the back cover.

Let us know how the compression checks out. Was it one of those 30-50thousand motors that looks more like 150xxx? Thats what mine looked like and they sent me a s4 instead of s5 and refused to deal with it. Just hope it checks out ok...

See a knock sensor on the front rotor housing? If yes, then you have an s5.

I did my test on the pallet. No it won't be perfect, but it will give you an indicator of whether or not you need to rebuild right away. I hooked the battery up to my harness and used a screw driver to crank it. I really don't think you could get a decent reading by turning it over by hand. I will tell you go ahead and invest in a few cans of Seafoam "Deep Creep". soak the motor down all 4 plug holes, the exhaust ports and intake if you can get down to it. Just one swapper to another. Hopefully you don't have to do rebuild right away.

The car has 125k on it now and the speedo seal on the tranny leaked last year. So figure while its out replacing all the seals seems cheap and easy.

Thx, I'm not familiar with Seafoam. I'll pick up a couple of cans.

Update

Had to go to London then my grandmother's funeral so been gone awhile.

The ecu is a 374 so I'm going to do the NA harness mod instead of trying to lengthen the JDM harness.

The engine looks good. Got it hanging from a hoist and it cleaned up nicely. Put a can of seafoam in the upper spark plug holes and then rotated it manually several times via the stub of a drive shaft left on there while slowly adding more Seafoam. Ran a whole can in there. Nice puffing and now that the engine is clean we'll hook up a battery and spin it with the starter and a compression tester. See if we are or

Questions:

1) I dont have the pieces to go from the turbo to the air filter. Are they the same on the S4s and S5s?

2) There is a plastic pipe that goes from the turbo up to the rubber elbow that enters the intercooler. There is a 3/4" hole in the side of it. It looks like something broke off of it. What is missing?

3) The right side engine mount is broken. Will the one from my vert swap in? Does the engine mount hold on the oil pan? I'm a little worried about leaks if it took enough force to break the motor mount.

4) Are the manual tranny instrument clusters interchangeable between S4s and S5s?

5) I know you can chisel the tranny mount from the frame and have it welded to the frame of the S5 vert. Can the donor be an S4 coupe or only an S5 coupe?

Thanks, guys.

1)You should make a custom one. Search TID mod.

2)Not that far yet on my build

3)Common for this to wear out. As far as I know all 86-92 mounts are the same.

4) They can interchange but you neet to customize some wire connect. Never done it just read about it.

5)Yeah haven't been there either.

1. get an intake pipe with a 45 degree angle on it and cut to what you need. I hear prelude rice CAI pipes work.

2. Just cap it.

3. yes the motor mounts will swap

4. dunno

5. i don't understand the question lol

Are you referring to a whole car?(sorry if the question sounds stupid)

I only ask because I have a 91 rx7, and I would like to try to bring it back with me to the states when I leave here.

It looks like they've modified it as that one pipe coming out of the turbo is blue.

5-speed tranny bracket

Ha! Mazda stopped putting the 5-speed mounting bracket on the S5 verts. From what I've read on the auto to 5-speed conversion threads, you can easily chisel off the 5-speed mounting brackets and then have it welded onto the vert chassis. So I was asking if the donor of the tranny bracket can be an S4.

The only difference between S4 and S5 mounts are the crossmembers and how it bolts to the trans. The mounts themselves and the body mounting holes are the same.
