J Spec vs rebuild- in general which are better?
So I may have to make a choice soon between getting my engine rebuilt or buying a J Spec engine.
My main question is, how much more life can I count on that J Spec to last? Or is it just pretty much a gamble?
Will I be able to get as much power out of it as with a rebuild?
Which way to go makes the most sense?
Thanks,
Kevin

well if your not too much worried about the cost, a rebuild would be a better way to go, especially if your motor isnt blown, I have seen rebuilding starting out around $1600 and for a few hundred more you can get it ported, it will cost more to get a rebuildable motor ported if its blown, extra parts needed ya know
as far as jspecs go, that Is the way I am leaning simply for cost, but I am having real bad luck finding one that isnt already blown
I have seen them as low as $850 and up to $1100 they usually are long blocks with turbo and TMIC (Jspec is bigger) sometimes you can get lucky and get the tranny with it.

Kevin,
The thing with Jspec motors especially if you get the 89-91 to go to your 87TII you will have to swap some parts from the 87 to the 89-91. This will include front cover, MOP, fuel rail, injectors, and some people might have some addition to this. The reason you have to swap this items are because the harness of the 89-91 are different of that the 87TIIs. The connectors are different. Its not too hard to swap them. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE 89-91 TURBO/MANIFOLD!..They are more superior than the older 87 ones.
I will tell you since i went with the rebuild-my-own-motor path. Total cost of new rotor housings, side housings, gaskets, and new seals totaled 2K dollars +. Reason i decided to go this path is because i will be porting the motor
.
If you decide to go with JSPEC i can take you to a place in GARDENA where you choose the motor you want!..sometimes if you get lucky you get the one with a bigger aftermarket TURBO!.
T'was funny because i found a BLITZ BOV still attached to a TOYOTA TWIN TURBO MOTOR and the guy didnt know what it was!. i told him if i can have it and he said "HERE's a HACKSAW" ..
...They are also open on saturdays..

I don't have a TII, got an 88 NA vert. I guess I should put something in my sig....
So do JSpecs come in NA??? or are they just turbo?
I guess I was just thinking cheap interim engine and I could hold my soon-to-be rebuilt engine as a spare. But 1, I don't really have anyplace to store an engine, and 2, it's sounding like going JSpec is still a risk and may not save me money in the end either.
Well at least my 7 isn't my daily driver and I can afford the downtime. Thanks guys.

uhhm no such thing as a n/a j-spec. unless its aftermarket, but why would someone do that?!
i say just rebuild it yourself the way you want it, save yourself some $$ and get it done right, but for turbo motors i like the j-spec idea first off.

Since your car is N/A, and they didn't make any N/A RX-7's in Japan, just get it rebuilt. I would spend the few extra bucks and have it ported, or you will regret it later
If you wanted to convert it to a turbo, then the J-Spec is the way to go. I got my 1991 J-Spec TII motor complete with 32,421 miles on it. It is still running strong today after almost a year. If your motor is still running fine, then rebuild it before you blow it and it really won't cost you that much. If it is blown, then the costs can more than double easily to replace parts.

Has anyone gotten a Jspec from Mazdaracing.com?If so, what kind of luck did you have with it?Also, can an air pump be put on a Jspec for emissions purposes.Cause I would need that to pass in cali.Thanks.

I just saw a SWEET Convertible/TII hybrid at Ennis this weekend. 325HP at the wheels, with a "upgrade" turbo and a street port. S-AFC and stock computer, 720's in the secondaries...

I have a jspec air pump on my car, its about half the size of the american one, and a bitch to hook up to the ACV. I had to use it because mine was locked up. I need to get another one, im tired of this thing.

What series is your J-Spec airpump from? I got my 91 J-Spec motor and it had a tiny assed airpump, but my buddy got a a series 4 j-spec motor, and his airpump was normal sized.
