J-spec TII or rebuilt TII engine.....

Ok I know a person that plans to get a J-spec
He says he can get it for 300-400 dollars (long block)
I personally don't know anything about reliability of crate motors and this is why I am asking. Is it worth it to drop in a J-spec for an N/a to TII swap? he will have to buy the TII tranny and differential from another source. What exactly comes with a long block? how long to they generally last compared to a rebuilt TII engine? how much money is it to rebuild a turbo and how much work is it? He could have gotten a TII rebuilt engine with TII drive train from Kevin Landers but apparently he didn't ask for kevin to hold it for him and put down no deposit. I personally would have not held anything withought a deposit so I understood what Kevin did although i have not talked to him yet about this. I have spoken with kevin on occassion and he seemed a nice guy to me. My friend was given 1800 as the price from kevin landers. which one is cheaper?

rebuilt TII engine. Jspecs are still old used engines. They're good cores...and you'll learn that if you throw one in your car and beat on it.

Well the rebuild is so easy that once the motor is out of the car it should be done if you have the money for a rebuild kit, and if you take the motor apart you can measure the tolerances of the seals and such, tell you what you need for your rebuild kit...the most I've spent on a kit was 300 bux, thing you can reuse are side seals, corner seals, oil seal steels, and even apex seals....those are the most expensive peices

he is doing a TII swap. IMO the setup Kevin landers was selling is a better idea 1800 for the engine intake all that junk and tranny.

You can't compare an unknown-mileage used engine with a rebuilt one. A second-hand motor from Japan is not going to be any better than a second-hand motor sourced locally. It may be worse because of the time it probably spent sitting in less-than-ideal conditions before, during and after shipping.

If he can afford a rebuild then do it. If he can't, get the J-spec. Dollars is the only consideration in this decision, not reliability or anything else.
