Issues after installing air filter directly to turbo.

O.k here's the deal.

I recently noticed a tear in my air filter. So, I ordered the Spectre HPR9831.
9831 - Spectre , Cartridge Filter/Airbox.
With the previous filter I had a 4" intake that was approximately 10 inches long. I took it off..
I took the Spectre filter out of the "can" and cinched it directly to the turbo.
HPR9831 - Spectre , Air Filter 7.0 in Tall.

Under full throttle I noticed the car makes a staged noise in the turbo intake and seems
like a plugged filter. The filter should flow enough but hard to say at this point.

I have now reinstalled a portion of the 4" intake and I am using the "can" to see if
having the filter TOO close to the turbo is causing some sort of interference with airflow. Turbulence or some issue I did not foresee.

My question; has anyone had issues having the air filter mounted directly onto their turbo?

Later tonight I will test drive the car and report back. I am anxious see if simply moving
the air filter farther away from the mouth of the turbo will give it a little more breathing room.

Attached are a couple pics.. (Please understand that the intercooler piping has yet to be welded and the black 90* elbow will be removed soon).

Not sure what the science is behind this particular issue, but reinstalling the intake pipe made all the difference in the world. Issue is gone.

maybe what you are hearing is Compressor surge.
I've got a Vibrant 4 inch on my Turbo and got zero issues.

That's exactly what I thought! I just wanted to hear someone else come up with the same idea..Thank you for confirming.

Like I said, it has disappeared now that I moved the filter farther away from the turbo.

The Comp unit I have has an anti-surge compressor housing. Maybe that's why it sounded the way it did.
I was trying to explain to my wife the sound it was making. I sucked air into my mouth through my teeth as I did this
I took a tissue paper and put it over my mouth. Same sound my shop vac makes when it falls over.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Joe
