intermittent loss of power
I have a 1987 Mazda RX7 SE with an auto transmission, no turbo and a miserable intermittent problem.
The car runs fine most of the time but will occasionally loose engine power. The engine continues to run with its rev's surging and falling in cycles, while the car coasts to a stop. Regardless of engine revs there is not enough power to move the car. Putting the car in neutral does not solve the surging and falling engine rev cycles. The cycle will continue at regardless of gas pedal pressure - or lack or it.
If the car is turned off and restarted, it will move short distances, up to a ¼ mile, before the problem reoccurs. Eventually, it will start and run fine without the problem resurfacing again for several weeks.
It has less than 2,000 on a new engine. At one point, the Mazda dealer had the car in their shop for three weeks trying to diagnose the problem without success. The problem occurred for them at least once, but they were still unable to come up with a solution.
Any advice?
