Intermittent Fuel Leak

On my 88 vert, i noticed this morning a little wetness from fuel under the PD while the engine was running and it was cold. I looked and didn't see the PD leaking (which i replaced 3 months ago) and about 10 minutes later, when the car was warmed up it was completely stopped. 100% dry as a bone. no fuel smell and no wetness in that area.

What in the world would cause something to leak and once it was warming up it was gone? that's the strangest thing i have ever seen.

did you replace the copper crush washers with new ones when you replaced the PD?

Maybe. I cant remember and it was my first rx7 fix (which is huge for a first time lol) would that make a difference?

I'm just confuse cause I haven't had a drop leak since I fixed it and it just started randomly happening, only when cold.

I'm going to get one of those mirrors i can stick down in there so i can see where it might be dripping from.

well.. think about it... when something is cold, its contracted... hence if something isnt tightened down just enough... it could leak...

once its warmed up however... it expands slightly... stopping the leak.

hmm... possible - considering it is now getting into the 20's and 30's at night, colder than it has been since i fixed it...

im going to look today and i hope its not something needing the TB to come off. thats about the worst activity on the face of the planet.

its not that hard... just leave it attached to the UIM and remove the both parts together.

good call. i will try look for the leak, and probably find it at the PD and then decide my next step.

I want to just JB Weld the dam thing.

ugh!

what you can do is delete the PD... but there is some controversy on that mod because over a long period of time, it can ruin your injectors.

but its really up to you... replacing your entire car after it burns to the ground or replacing your injectors after they fail (if they fail).

all you need for the mod is a M12 x 1.25 banjo bolt and some copper crush washers.

heres the 'how to':

considering how new my PD is, if in fact this is the leak, can i just get a copper crush washer, pull up the UIM (last time i did this i had to replace the gasket which also sucked), unscrew the PD then slip the washer on and out it all back together?

should be able to... just be sure that you remove the old washer.

there might also be 2 washers in there... one between the PD and fuel line and one between the fuel line and the rail... but i dont recall.

i just ordered the washers just in case. it cost like $5. no sweat. And I'll report back at lunch. however, it's never done it after work or at lunch if i drive my car. probably cause it isnt cold enough for the metal to contract that much.

so after looking into it this morning... it's coming from the 3 inch hose on the right of the PD. I watched it and sure enough, the drip is 3 inches or so to the right of the PD, along that hose. drip...drip...drip...

its a slow drip leak and this doesnt surprise me as I had another fuel hose split a few weeks ago (the one coming from the fuel filter to the motor).

I'm going to see if i can replace it without removing the intake.

If the emissions are still intact on your car, leaving the intake on while trying to replace that hose might be troublesome.

edit: But congrats on it not being the PD!

totally agreed. it's going to be a pain - but anything is better than removing the intake.

but my mechanic friend (i hate when people say that) would fix it for me, and put the washer on my PD for $150 after hours at his shop. i might take him up on it.

from the looks of it - if i remove the alternator - i should be able to swap the hose out.

confirmed - it's dripping off the hose clamp from the fuel hose to the right of the fuel rail. with the alternator off it will be a tight fit, but i think i can do it
