Interesting Ignition problem...help!

Hoping someone can help out with this issue... and yes, tried search! After just installing a 13B FI S5 motor in my 88 (non turbo) the car will absolutley not start. I have figured out that the problem lies with the ignition. I have tested the CAS and the coils and all are within spec. In attempting to set the timing, i can set the L1 to the Leading mark on the crank pulley, but then when checking the timing on the T1 coil, it is the exact same as the L1 (set to the yellow mark on the crank pulley). I have tried resetting the ECU and that doesnt do anything to fix the problem. Any ideas? or directions i should head?

Thanks!!!

Engine won't start and your setting the timing? Not kosher.

Prior to the engine getting hot, the timing is retarded by the ECU. Extremely retarded. And both the lead and trail fire at the same retarded time......when the engine is cold.

Warm the engine up prior to putting a timing light on it.

Here's a jpg of a Palm showing the Lead and Trail timing with a stone cold engine. Both Lead and Trail are the same.

P.S. after the engine starts it goes minus five on lead and minus twenty on trai.

On real cold days, IF I remember right, both read the same at some low timing figure til the engine warms up. I shoulda written that down. Gotta wait til winter or fake out the water themp sensor with a resistor or ice cube.
