intake from stock air box

I noticed a difference in acceleration from this ( i hope its not all in my head lol) First i cut a big square in the lid of the air box

Then i grinded the squares smooth on the inside of the box

I also made my own headlight vents, i had an extra cover to play with and i didnt have the money to buy one, it will look better when i repaint it

It looks pretty good imo as well, my theory was under acceleration the air coming thrugh the vents is forced in to the box, and unlike a big open round filter, it isnt sucking in air from the bottom like most intakes, K&N for example.
So..........what do you guys think

I thought this was dumb until I saw that you vented in fresh air. It should still be sealed off from the warm air under the hood, though.

Even with a good system the gains are too small to be noticed.

Yeah it would be pretty useless without vents and im currently working on a way to seal it against the hood, im gonna put some wire mesh in the vent holes to.

There is nothing forcing air into the box. Those slots in the headlight cover will be achieving practically nothing at all.

That makes no difference at all. I promise you most of the air being sucked into the intake will be air from the engine bay, and most of that air has passed through the radiator.

Sorry, but your effort has been largely wasted. You've removed some restriction by removing the top of the box, but you've increased the intake air temp as well. The end result is very little gain.

This is what you have just done to me NZ lol If i can make the air box seal against the hood and only be able to get air through the headlight vent i should notice a difference right?

Put the top part back on, but create a vent in the front of it directly behind your vented headlight cover.

Please post back with results; I am interested to hear how this worked.

My estimation is that your throttle response will improve, though you will likely lose a negligible amount of horspower if you do not reinstall the cover of the air box.

No can do about the cover, it was already broke thats why i used it, i will try to seal it against the hood in a way that its only getting air throught the vents, ill check my local junkyards and see what i can do about getting a few lids to play around with., but in the end i want it sealed up and only getting air from the vents this is by far not done yet i just wanted to post my progress, maybe somebody can learn something and improve upon it and share with us. but i will say if your on a budget, instead of shelling out a hundred and something this works just as well as the k&n FIPK
