Question Intake Port Gunk

I've got 87 non-turbo. Just took throttle body and chamber off to get to pulsation damper for change. I noticed brown gunk on inside of intake porting. Question: how much advantage gained by cleaning this stuff off? Milage vs performance? And: how to remove it? Polish it with my dremel?

How much ? Noone can tell you that....but the cleaner/smoother, the better Both performance and consumption-wise....

How to remove ? Use a dissolvant or carb cleaner, and if these dont work, try a degreaser. If this doesnt work, yeah you could use a mild dremel or sandpaper....

Just don't go gouging around where the throttle plates rest.

I used carb cleaner when the intake was off the car. Just let it sit for a while and it might drain out the nasty gunk for you. I also soaked my injectors in carb cleaner. Take the rubber grommets and o-rings off first. Probably want to put new grommets and o-rings back on when you put it back together. Its real easy to get an intake leak whe reusing the old rubber pieces.

Best way to clean that **** out is to remove the intake from the engine and clean it with a degreaser solvent (Gunk Foamy Engine Brite, etc.) and a nylon-bristled bottle brush. That's the best way to get it all out. You can also just spray solvent in the intake with it on the engine, but it may then go into the rotor housings and start wreaking havoc in there.

I would definitely NOT use a Dremel or similar mechanical cleaning method with the intake still on the engine, as you will for sure get chunks of stuff falling down into the rotor housings.

The things that makes the most difference for smooth operation is the throttle body. You want that to be as clean as possible. If you ever notice that your throttle geta a little "sticky" just off idle, the likely culprit is a dirty throttle body. The runners make little difference in normal driving, an may in fact help airflow by having the crap fill in the "dead" spots in the curves. Cleaning the runners will mostly help in the higher rpm ranges, where you want as much air to flow with as little resistance as possible.
