Intake, Exhaust.. You know.. newbie stuff :)

I have a '86 GXL Auto tranny...

If I were to throw on a wider exhaust, better flowing pre-cats, and a better intake... what am I going to have to do to ensure the proper fuel amount and flow for the increased air flow?

And... while I'm here. I was searching through past posts and came across a spark plug post...

Talking about cold plugs... 9's.. 7's.. etc. If 7's have a higher heat rating, couldn't you just run 7's all around.. or do you need to run a set of trailing/leading for some reason?

on an N/A you don't need to worry about fuel. don't worry about the plugs on an N/A either, just run the stock 7/9. it'll be best. all 9's "might" give a bit more power, but I doubt you'll notice, and you'll have to change them more often.

Uhh well you don't need anything for an NA with just intake and exhaust, second just stick with the NGK spark plugs, just ask for 2 leading and 2 trailing.

Hey, welcome to the rotary family

Ok, you need to go for the basics of course. Intake Header and Exhaust.

Intake : I would reccomend the Checkpoint Engineering cold air intake. The website is www.checkpointengineering.com. Although the intake is not listed on the site, you can just call the phone number. I go to this shop for stuff with my car, and i was there when they developed the the cold air intake. Its all mandrel bent big piping, with big K&N cone filter and splash guard. The filter sits right in the mouth of your car, fat cold air! The car that was tested on had racing beat headers and a greddy catback as well. This setup flow so much more air that you will need a T2 fuel pump to make it all work right.

Headers : Go with the racing beats, they work great.

Cat : Get a high flow cat of larger diameter so you can pass emmisions, not be too loud, and not restrict too much flow

Exhaust : This is your choice on what you are looking for. I have a dual Greddy Power extreme and i would do the same again. The Greddy sport is great too, both very well made. If you want your car LOUD, then go for the N1 setup. Greddy sounds great, looks cool, and not too loud. Can get these from www.corksport.com, or www.RX7.com
I hope this helps you out. The NA that had the headers, cold air, exhaust and T2 fuel pump was a hair away from an 87 T2 in seat of the pants feel. I know the checkpoint intake is expensive compared to just a filter from RX7.com, but it works much better.

Good Luck
Graham
