instrument panel removal

hey, im trying to replace the bulbs behind the instrument panel (tachometer, speedometer, oil pressure...etc) and i got that plastic peice off the steering wheel top and i managed to get off the cover (with the dials to turn on lights and turn signal)

well, my question is...how do you disconnect the wiring harnesses off the rear of the instrument panel (white part). Ive tried to get the panel out as far as i could to get it off, ive also tried going under near the pedals and the fuse box inside the car and looked up, there is a plate in the way...neone know how i can take them off easily enough to put them on now problem?

any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
jeff

with the black plastic piece(lights, wipers controlls) out you should be able to get the instrument cluster out. it can be difficult because it is a little tight behind there, but its the only way to get it out. im assuming your talking about the circular wiring connections and speedo cable that you cannot reach. only thing i can say is to pull at it one side -i always pull the left side, unlpug the first connection on left, then middle then speedo cable. hope this helps a little. good luck

The one thing that really keeps the insturment panel from coming out far enough for you to disconnect the two plugs, is the speedometer cable. Go intot the engine bay and find the speedometer cable where it goes inside the cabin. Shove that cable into the cabin. There is a lot of slack there to shove into the cabin or if you will towards the driver(you don't have to disconnect from the transmission). Then go back into the cabin and you'll find that you have a lot more room. Two plugs and one speedometer cable hold it in. There's a tab on each that needs to be manipulated(forgot which way) to disconnect each item.

It's best to remove the steering wheel first to give yourself more room. If you have never done this before, you can get an inexpensive generic steering wheel puller from your local auto parts store.

Yes, it's easier to pull the plug on the left side first. Note that this is a single plug at the end of a Y connection that comes off the rear of the dash. The plug is rectangular, about 2.5" x 0.5", and at the end of about 1 ft of the foam-covered wire bundle. The other two ends of the Y connection will stay attached to the rear of the white dash piece.

The speedo cable connects directly to the rear of the gauge. Be sure to grasp the clip when removing the speedo cable, or you may damage the equipment. You will not be able to see it, so you will need to feel around for it. The cable will release when you squeeze the clip properly. When you reinstall it, be sure that the clip is lined up properly, or the cable will pop out as soon as the car starts moving - you will see what I am talking about once you look at it.

This manual may help. You need the "Body" section.
