Installing a Pilot Bearing in an Auto?

My old manual motor crapped out and managed to find a motor from an auto for my 88 S4. I had ordered two pilot bearing in the event that something went wrong with one, and I was right. When I began to install the bearing I was only able to install it about 2/3rds into the back of the E-shaft and would then no longer go further. I hadn't played with manuals very much, my experience in general is with automatics, but is there supposed to be something in the way to prevent from installing a bearing? Something for the torque converter?

Nope, not bees or the like, it was cleaned out before I began installing, but there's another metal ring in there when I looked inside. Doesn't appear to be a pilot bearing ring.
