Personally, I would prefer a 10-micron filter to those 40-micron filters.
Also, keep in mind that small inline filters generally need to be cleaned or replaced annually, while the stock canister filter is good for about 60,000 miles.

I just went through a major pain in the butt with a 1st gen and a contaminated fuel tank and I must say that those little filters will clog very, very easily.
