improving the auto shifting

I bought an 86 2+2 for my girlfriend not too long ago. I finally got around to making it road worthy and drove it 300 miles on one of my weekly trips.
Not a bad car for a total of $900. rebuilt motor, after market rims quite and fairly quick for being a stock auto shifter.
I was thinking since I have 4 other 5 speeds, why not keep the auto for the girl. If I can fix the shifting issues I will keep it.
On a down shift from 5th, it shifts too late and then blows right past 3rd into second. it does this every time. then, on the upshift, it will go to 3rd for a couple of seconds and then 4th too soon. also the overdrive off button doesn't do anything.
Any ideas? I was thinking anyway of using synthetic ATF. I know that helps sometimes. but I was thinking of something abit more invasive. like a shift kit or custom work.

you do know it is a 4 speed auto not 5 speed?
With the the overdrive button out, you should not get 4th gear at all!! If you are something is ain't right. Section 7b of the FSM has a large troubleshooting section on the auto trans in there..

I hope it helps you find your problem

are there 5 speed autos in these cars?
If it works like other cars. for a 4 speed you get to select 1, 2, D and OD.
So I guess no one knows any way to make it shift better? the only mods planed for this car are an exhaust, intake, e-fan, suspension, and maybe a port job on the intake and ports.
