Importance of a TPS

I know my throttle position sensor is bad because my car told me and I ordered one today. First off what is its purpose and what does it control really?

If it is bad...it will go Open at certain times...my circuit goes open at 20-25 degrees open. This then confuses the computer and you will notice problems with acceleration...from what I understand...

I think it triggers a limp mode, not sure...At the very least, the ECU will revert to a stored memory throttle position when you hit that open...
