Importance of a TPS

I know my throttle position sensor is bad because my car told me and I ordered one today. First off what is its purpose and what does it control really?

Basically tells the ECU where the throttle is...

If it is bad...it will go Open at certain times...my circuit goes open at 20-25 degrees open. This then confuses the computer and you will notice problems with acceleration...from what I understand...

I think it triggers a limp mode, not sure...At the very least, the ECU will revert to a stored memory throttle position when you hit that open...
