Question Im Stumped

Well this is my first post so please take it easy on me. I have an 87 RX7 and I was driving along just fine and had to stop at a stop sign. I felt like some kind of bump and after that the car wouldnt run right. I had my foot to the floor and could get only 40mph top speed. The car would not idle at all, it would shut down. After inspecting it I found that I could pull the wires from the trailing coil and the car would run the same. I have replaced the plugs, which it desparatly needed but not the wires, (yet) I did replace the trailing coil with one from eBay but that still didnt help. Ive swapped wires and all that and still nothing. The trailing plugs dont seem to be firing still at all. I know I have spark from the coil, I took the wires out of it and put them close to it and cranked it and spark would jump to the wires. Im clueless....and have no idea. Help me please....this is my baby....

Thanks in Advance !!

trailing wires and plugs really has very little to do with running, and are more for emissions than anything else.

What is the compression on the motor???

Icemark is right. All the trailing plugs do is burn off extra unburned gas.

When my 82 chunked a apex seal, at forty mph cruising, it had the same symptoms you have. I see no reason you shouldn't have broken a apex seal like I did. So I say .......your running on only one rotor. The other is busted. Just my opine.

Thanks for all your replies. I will try pulling the plug wires from each rotor individually and see if the car still runs the way it does. That should tell if there is one thats not working right ? I am also trying to find someone that has a compression tester for the rotary since it seems that it is a special one ?

In my case when I lost a rotor tip I also had a lot of backfiring.

Since you are checking for massive compression loss you should be able to get away with using a standard compression tester used for piston engines. You will need to modify it slightly to remove the check valve - have a search on the forum for "compression test" and I'm sure you will find a detailed description.

Well again, Thanks to all for your replies. Here is what I did, I removed the front two plug wires, car wouldnt start. I removed the back two, car started and ran like it does at the moment. To me, and correct me if Im wrong, sounds like it did indeed chunk an apex seal and there is not any compression on that rotor. Does that sound likely ? Anyone in the Maryland area interested in this car ? I have neither the time, money, or the place to be able to do a rebuild or a motor swap. Thanks again......Dwayne
