Cool I'm one lucky SOB

so I was pulling apart my engine for my rebuild, and I pull off the UIM. the first thing I notice is there are 2 cracking fuel lines. I don't know if they were leaking, or getting ready to explode. they were BAD. then, I unbolt the fuel rail, and pull it off(picking it up with my hand around the PD). I set it on the ground, and the little plastic cap falls off (its cracked), and the little screw comes out with it.
so then I look on top of the engine, and in a little cup between the LIM and the engine, there's a puddle of GASOLINE!! I have no idea how long it was leaking, I'm just lucky it didn't make it to my exhaust manifold.

you can see how the PD was totaly broken in this picture:

Gloves? Wussy! J/K

Funny this came up, I'm having the same problem right now

I'm rebuilding all the fuel lines under the UIM, got a replacement pulsation dampener, and I'm also replacing the primary fuel rail..

How is your injector grommets? Mine are no good. Oh well. They are cheap.

Replacement Line: 5/16 - 7.9mm High Pressure FI Line

this one shows one of the cracked hoses and some of the fuel sitting on the engine. the cracked hose looks MUCH worse in person.

BTW - I have alot of splash stains from fuel all over my bellhousing. When I found the leak it was dripping down and narrowly missing the exhaust manifold.

I actually had a stab mark in my primary to secondary rail line.. Coulda been form dinking around down there with misc. vacuum lines.. Be careful guys..

I was thinking of replaceing the PD with just a banjo bolt. well, at least I've heard of that being done. does it affect anything besides make it impossible for the PD to leak ?

the injector gromets actually looked okay. however, I broke one in the removal process. that bitch was stuck in there good. but I was planning on replacing them anyway.

speaking of injectors, the ones in the LIM looked different than the ones in the engine block. I wish I had a picture. but I thought all 4 were supposed to be exactly the same?

dang. well at least you found the leak and are fixing it. mine showed no signs from the outside. I just discovered it during my engine tear down for my rebuild.

Banjo bolt has been done. Easiest way is to use one from another doner FC fuel rail. It's free!

I'm not doing the banjo bolt though.. Pulsation dampener is there to dampen the pulsation in the lines.. Who would have guessed!

Many guys have done the banjo bolt with no change/complains to their running and overall fuel system health..

People say taht removing the PD creates more pressure and stress on the the other fuel components but I personally have not had any problems.

cool! I'll just take one from one of the extra fuel rails I have.

I'd like to have the PD, but I don't want the risk of it failing again, and setting my engine on fire. that wouldn't make me very happy.

How insightful!

Rails are the same in absolutely every way, then?

Difference between S4s and S5s are the low and high impedance injectors.. So I would guess they used the same rails..

No they are not the same they (S5) are better! It is suggested to pick up a set of fuel rails and while your at it just go ahead and get a VDI intake while your at it. -Gabe

if you put in the S5 rail. you will need the 2 bolts from the S5 as well that bolt it down. as they are shorter or longer. one of those.

^ Good advice. ^

Seriously. You can see the PD just peeking out from underneath the intake. Easy to see and inspect, but a little bit difficult to get at for removal/replacement.

twisterdriver, run your finger around it, then smell your finger. If your oily finger smells like gas, there is a problem. Black13B is right. Its easy to see, easy to inspect, and a bit difficult to access, but not as difficult as watching your car go up in flames.
