Im new and I have questions.

Ok, I'm gonna be a newb here and ask some dumb questions. I'm interested in a second gen rx7, but I know little about cars and less about rotarys, but am willing to learn. There are few mechanics around me that can work on rotarys, so my question is how hard is it to work on them when they fail if all I have is a repair manual, basic knowledge, and the will to learn?

Second. can anyone provide me with 0-60 and quarter mile times as well as top speed.

Third. How hard is it to replace the NA engine with a turbo one? Do you have to redo the tranny and all or what?

Fourth. How well do they respond to simple mods such as cold-air intake and exaush and such.

Thanks for bearing with me

Real basic -

The RX-7, in general is a REALLY easy car to work on. Being rear-wheel drive helps a lot . There are some things that are a bear to do, like any car, but a lot of typical maintenance items aren't hard.

Don't forget, these cars are getting pretty old, so many for sale are pretty beat up or need quite a bit of work.

It's a REALLY big job to do a turbo swap - that's covered over and over on this forum. Best to start with a turbo. NA's are great cars, but don't have anywhere near the horsepower potential of a turbo.

The only other thing I'd say is avoid getting an automatic - the trannies are prone to failure, and the car is really not fun with an auto .

Search through this forum and the web, and you'll find way more info than you need.

Of course it would be a stick. I hate autos. As for the turbo, I kinda figured it was far fetched, but I was still curious.

1) It's not very hard to work on them other than the fact that 99% of the maintenance and performance books do not cover the rotary engine. Fortunately, the rest of the car is pretty standard. You can access free online factory service manuals at this web site under How-To's/Manuals:
http://fc3s.org/

2) See Specifications:
http://2ndgenrx7.freeservers.com/page1.html

3) The NA to turbo swap is not worth the time or money unless you want a turbo convertible (not sold in the US). A TII RX-7 is only about $500-1000 more than an NA of the same year and condition, and they have the SAME insurance rate with most US insurance companies. http://2ndgenrx7.freeservers.com/cgi...2874/swap.html

4) The 2Gen RX-7 comes from the factory with a cold-air intake, but you can spend $150-350 on an aftermarket cold air intake if it makes you feel better. A high-flow air filter adds a couple of horsepower, a high-flow catback exhaust adds 5-10hp, and full exhaust adds about 50-60hp. You can read more about go-fast goodies on these sites:
