Im new, but willing to learn :)

Hi all, i registered here about 90 seconds ago and do have a whole lot of questions.
Right now ive got a running and driving 91 eagle talon awd tsi. I was offered a trade for a 91 rx-7, both with close to the same miles, but the rx7s motor only has 50k miles on it. The trade would be my talon for his rx-7 and some money. The Rx-7 needs a new coolant jacket and either a new MOP or a MOP removal. he has already found a reputable rotary shop that will do the entire rebuild for 500 if i can find a way to pull the engine for them. Should i do it?
Also, ive read a bunch of write ups on rotarys, and im pretty sure i understand how it works, but i do have a 1/5 scale plastic model of it at work that i think im gonna buy and build just as a learning experience. Is there anyone in the lititz/lancaster county PA area that would be willing to help a new guy out?

If a coolant jacket has failed, there is no way you could do a rebuild for $500. A decent housing alone would cost a couple hundred, well alone to add on the cost of the gasket and seal kits.

he tells me it is just the soft seals gone, not the housing.

^that may be the case, but there is NO way to tell exactly which until you crack the keg open.

And once you've gone that far there's no turning back. But eiter way if it does need a housing you should be able to find one used in decent shape locally without spending an arm and a leg.

most reputable shops won't reuse 50k miles apex seals. labor alone would be about $500, you will probably get a half assed job for $500 for a comprehensive rebuild with a $100+ iron housing and $150+ gasket kit which only leaves $250 for his labor in the rebuild. it takes me almost 2 full days to clean the parts for a rebuild, that gives you an idea of what kind of job you will get.

for a real rebuild with attention put into it it takes at least 30 hours, i don't know of any real shops that can afford to keep the lights on working for $8.33 per hour.

ok, ill look around for a few shops. hopefully i can find a plce to do a decent job.
