ignition question

today coming home my car started to run rough pass 3000 rpm ,then the tach went out ,all other gauges work so it isnt the meter fuse ,if the trailing coil goes bad will it not send a signal to the tach gauge?
does anyone know what color the signal wire is to the stock tach gauge on a 89 turboll?
i cant check for codes as its raining
thanks

That makes sense.

On an 88 it's yellow with a blue stripe, and this probably wasn't changed. Look for a short wire with a female bullet terminal coming of the harness that goes to the trailing coils 4-pin plug. It comes off the tach wire so a diagnostic tach can be connected. The tach wire will be the same colour as this one and be on the same plug.

Disable the trail coil assy by pulling apart the little white connetor to it, and then start the car. Should be able to run on the Lead coil assy by itself with no difference than if running on both lead and trail coils. Not start and run??? Lead coil assy problem. Start and run rough? Change plugs and wires on at a time. Still not run good?? Pull the top plugs and do a compression test.
