Which ignition for Carbed 6-port
Which ignition for Carbed 6-port
Im looking to install a side draft setup for a 2nd gen RX7 that I have laying around and I have a few questions about what can I use for spark. Can I use the factory "wasted spark" and CAS for carbs? I really dont want to run a 12A dizzy unless I really have to. I know that many say thats it EASIER, but is it required? I know many of you might argue that EFI is better and all that jazz but I just want to try this out. I have owned other cars (lousy Piston motors
) with side drafts and am pretty knowledable about tuning them and how they work so please dont try to argue about EFI being better.
I have a Dellorto 48 side draft and a RB upper manifold and a Carter "rotary pump" 8psi w/Holley 1-4 psi regulator just sitting around waiting to be slapped on.
Here are my current mods on the engine and drivetrain:
1987 RX7 n/a stock port
Open 6 ports (removed sleeves and all that crap from the manifold as well)
Racing Beat header to 2 1/2" piping and fart can
HKS Filter (big *** one)
Accel 8mm wires
Clutchnet 6puck clutch and heavy duty pressure plate
SR motorsports 12 lb. flywheel
4.10 gears and stock lsd
Royal Purple in trans and diff and sometimes motor (that **** is expensive)
Premix outboard TCW-3 1oz.:1gal for daily, 2oz.:1gal on 91 octane
I just wanna give it a try cause my current setup CANNOT hang with my little bro's Stockport 12A with 45 OER sidedraft and DLDFIS igntion setup using 3 MSD blaster 2 coils, Rotary Engineering road race header to 2 1/2 piping to fart can, 10mm Magnecor wires, Fidanza 8lb. flywheel and 4puck clutch and coolant seal leak equipped 1st gen
.Even without the clutch and flywheel combo, that 1st gen can move so I wanna see if my FC can perform the same.

If you want to use the stock CAS and iginition system than you will need some kind of computer to control spark. I think someone has tried it using the megasquirt, but I don't remember for sure. Look through the Megasquirt forum and you will probably find the thread.

This has been covered so many times...
Basically, you have three options:
1. Use the stock ECU, coils, CAS, sensors and such to run the stock ignition system. You will need to retain the AFM, so this is not likely the solution you will want.
2. Use a dizzy from an earlier 12A/13B. Use anything from '81 on as that was when they made the switch from points to ignitors. You will also need a set of coils.
3. Use an aftermarket ECU to control the stock coils. A Megasquirt is the cheapest way to do this and will give you full leading and trailing ignition control. You'll need to modify the 'Squirt with a second VR circuit and the appropriate ignition outputs as described in the 'Squirt FAQ. Of course once you've wired in the 'Squirt, you will probably realize how much carbs suck and convert the car fully to EFI.
