Arrow If I Blew an Apex Seal Does that Mean For Sure I Need New Rotors and Housings??

SOrry for the noobish questions but i need to rebuild this motor. I want to use s5 rotors and the port the thing but I need to make sure I need new rotor and housing on that front rotor befoer i decide to purchase and get started. It seems to me that the rotor face and housing would be screwed but is that a given?

No way to know for certain until it's torn down. Frequently the rotor will survive even if the housing doesn't. We should start a pool. You post how you popped the motor and how quickly you shut it down and we bet on if you have 0, 1 or 2 good housings and how many apex seal grooves are ok (0-6).

rear rotor is fine. I can still drive the car if I have to and I get no pulses out of the engine on the front rotor whatsoever meaning I took out two apex seals...

My experience was, blown front rotor, no apexes left on the rotor, = trashed rotor AND housing

what is what I was thinking. So before I go out and rent a cherry picker for a day and then two weeks later have to go rent it again, might as well get a housing and rotor and do it all at once. However if i decide to port and rebuild i might as well rent the picker twice.....hmmm...either way, i want all of the parts before I even get started. But what about putting the s5 rotors in my s4?

I ended up buying the cherry picker, It cost me about the same as renting the it wice S5 rotors will be just fine on the S4 housings.

Plan on the rotor and housing being bad. About 1/15 times, the rotor will be only lightly scratched and can be filed down and use as 2mm or milled out for 3mm, but this is fairly rare. Any scratch in teh housing is one too many, and there's almost no way a chunk of seal that's 2mm in width can exit an engine where the tightest clearance is <1mm without contacting both surfaces. Keep in mind that this happens at speed when momentum is high, and the fact that the surfaces are quite hot and malleable, and it's easy to see why damage is almost unavoidable.

Always plan for a rotor and rotorhousing, and if you dont need them then it's just a bonus...

depends on year/model...new, around $400-500 each. Used, anywhere from $50-300 each depending on condition and the man holding them.

ok sounds good. Also after digging around on ebay I managed to find a few others. Now what about throwing s5 rotors in there. Will I need some other counterwieghts and will I have to change timing or anything. I know this is a noobish question and I need to search but i might as well ask since the thread is open.

You need s5 front counterweight and s5 NA flywheel. Both rotors need to be of the same letter, or within 1 letter of each other. Letters are stamped on the gear side, A through E.
