Would you be able to hear it rattling around or scraping if the apex seal was cracked or broken? cause i think thats what happened but the car cranks over cleanly? i havent tried to start it at all because theres no exhaust on it but ive cranked it over.

 

If you're hearing a noise, but no other symptoms then I cannot imagine that it's an apex seal. If a seal breaks you'll notice a huge difference in power, it'll shake the whole car, etc.

BTW: How many RX-7s are there in Syria?

 

Is your exhaust manifold off, too? If it is, you should be able to peek in there to see if the seal is intact.

 

For a sure answer - a compression test.
