Idle problem tps or something else?

When i start my 88 turbo II it starts out hitting 3000 for warm up and slowly idles down... healty as i have heard. but then it dies, then when i fire it back up it idles at 1000 then to 800 then tries to die again. I can give it gas but it struggles to stay at idle, but as soon as I back out of my garage (which i do right after restarting it) it starts to idle better and when i drive it without letting it idle say a 5 min drive on the freeway it goes away almost entirely. after driving it awhile it just idles rough going from 800 - 500 - 600 - 500 - 800 never dying just not smooth idle. Also the first starting problem only occurs when it hasn;t be driven within a few hours, so if i drive it to the mall and go around for a few hours it starts fine and doesn;t die.

Also my compression is good so thats not it.

Thanks any advice would help.

If it were me, I'd eliminate the easy things first. TPS properly set and functioning. Idle speed set by specs after the TPS is correctly set. BAC valve functioning and not sticking. Verify these things and adjust settings as needed. After that if the problem persists, start looking for vacuum leaks. Obvious places likr the individual vacuum lines and not so obvious places like gaskets at the UIM and LIM and the O-rings and grommets at the injectors.

Then checkout the function and setting of the thermowax. Idle problems result from many causes and you just have to eliminate them one by one.

2nd with Chuck - there's lots of stuff that can do this, but there's a pretty good FAQ on this in the 2nd gen Archives. Usually it's a vacuum leak, or Throttle body air bypass/2nd throttle plates out of adjustment.

Ill agree with chuck and richter, but first i would check vacuum lines. The symptoms you stated above really sound like a vacuum leak. That would be my best guess.

nah if it were a vacuum leak then it would shut off every time you let off the gas....inless it is a small one but then you wouldnt have a problem on start up.....i actually have the same problem as you do and i have the same car you do...ive been told by many people its the TPS and..or.. thermowax..either get a new one or get it tuned and it should take the problem away...

to help keep this problem from happening as much after you pull out of your garae then hold the rpms at about 1 to 1 .1/2 for less than a minute that should help to keep it from shutting off. all your doing is getting it to warm up the tps to where it is supposed to be

also search this..there are many threads already out there about this problem
