idle problem!?

a friend of mine has an 86 n/a that he bought new in 86. the motor was replaced by some ma and pa garage, so this new motor has about 52,xxx miles on it. Motor runs strong, pulls evenly and everything, but the thing will not idle even when it warms up. Trying you drive it you have to just keep heel-toeing the gas with the clutch in or else it will just stall out. I know it's pretty general, but is there any common troubleshooting?

You need to get your hands on the FSM, fuel section, and perform the idle adjustment steps outlined therein...Same with checking out the BAC operation...

You could also try searching for "idle adjustments", there are threads daily on this topic...

My guess is a simple mechanical idle adjustment via the TB screw will fix her right up...

just an FYI, there's a link to an article at teamfc3s.org in the FAQ that describes the idle troubleshooting process.

here it is http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/articles/idle.html

that search function isnt intuitive the first few times u use it. just remember to click advanced search and narrow the search down to the forums that might actually have the info. otherwise u get 1000 hits of totally non-related info.

maybe we should add a description of the search function to the FAQ

im haven the same problem but, it started happening after work when i was warming up my car then all of a sudden it died... so i then took it home and replaced the spark plugs and wires, and changed the oil, and it still died, i then thought maybe its dirty fuel injectors so i bought jet fuel hoping that would clean it up, but it still dies... and when i hold the gas down to about 1k rpm, the whole car kicks around and back fires repeadidly qeuitly as if it was going to die... any takers on what the problem may be? ahhh i fergot, it may be my ECU, i removed the ECU and installed a Race ECU that the formoer owner had and used, he took it out to pass emmisions test ill also test that out, by switching the original back in.

Yea idle is a big problem, it seems like it's a delicate issue. Here is a link to my site, the part with info on tuning the idle on a turbo engine. Project Rotary

tps and idle ajust screw, lean rich screw, if it backfires and wont idle below 1000 it might be a decent sized vacume leak
