I want a fast car - is the RX7 fast?

Im after a FAST car as my next vehicle, and by FAST i mean REALLY fast.

Is the RX7 up to it?
Ive seen them going for £1500 or so and so they come into the price range im after.
I was originally after a 200SX S13, due to the explosive turbo power and the upgradability, aswell as fun int he wet (and dry for that matter!)
Can the RX7 beat this power for the price?

What are the 0-60 figures? Handlings good i understand, but hows the top speed and bhp as standard?
What can they be tuned to easily? The SX can go to 270bhp with little fuss, then it gets expensive.

I know this is an RX7 forum, and bound to be biased, but if someone could give me some straight answers that would be great.

Cheers
PugPete

Whats your location? It looks like by the currencey its England but not sure.
Well if you want a FAST car you should get yourself a newer Rx7, and by newer i mean like the 93-95 rx7's if you can find em. Only prob is there hard to find and are expensive. How much are you looking to spend? If you looking to spend less then id have to say the 2nd generation rx7's would be best for you like the 87-91 and defelty a turbo. The fastes for the years are the 89-91 or series 5.
The numbers:
for the 87-88
1/4: 15.3 @91.8
hp: 182 bhp (net) @6500 RPM/ 183 lb-ft @3500 RPM
top speed:142mph
for the 89-91
1/4: 15.1 @93.3
hp: 200 bhp (net) @6500 RPM/ 196 lb-ft @3500 RPM
top speed: 146
There are many other diffrences between the two series but mainly they are in the engines, and for sake of keeping this short i wont get into them.
The TII can be made very fast with simple mods like the exaust/intake and many others. We have guys that get into the low 14's with these mods. WHen you get into the more upgrded turbos then youll see A LOT lower times corse that equals A LOT more cost.
To summerize id say for thecost these cars can be made very fast with a lot less then youd pay for any new sports car. They will require more maintence but that is normal. Anyways good luck!!

for the 89-91 6.5second
and for the 87-88 6.7 seconds
By the way this info was optained by a websight run by one of the members of this forum who is very knowledgable.

I think you should go for the nissan.

You seem to want cheap fun which RX7's are not.
Shure they are cheap to buy but are kinda expensive to repair are it is sometimes hard to find parts that are inexpensive. Purchase price of my car was 2k US dollars plus legal stuff add-on acouple of hundred more this was not even a great looking car but it runs badass then I had my oil cooler lines blow that was a 160 dollar repair did it myself ofcourse but since you are kinda new to rotaries you are going to have to learn how to fix your car on your own replaced my pulsation dampener to keep the car from catching fire from leaking fuel 130 dollar repair bought a parts car for spare body parts I needed i.e hood pass. side headlight assembly which did not work cost of car 300 dollars bought cone intake adapter for 22 dollars on e-bay shipped I think I proly got like two hp out of that getting a full exhaust for about 12-15hundred dollars that will be about 15-30 hp depending on who you believe. If you want a fast cheap car with low maintenance buy a piston engined car but if you are prepared to be a loveing care giver to the car and spare no expense on the maintenance and you will not cut corners then go with a REX but I is harder to keep these cars on the road especialy the turbo's you always here about someons turbo leaking oil badly or some one blew an apex seal becuase they overboosted or whatever. My ultimate point is if you want easy and relativly cheaper nissan is cool I see a lot of those Z cars here but if you want ultimate fun but at a price the seven is you car.

What makes the RX-7s exceptionally fast cars is the 1) their lightweight 2) track car suspension 3) exceptional aerodynamics, and 4) massive HP potential.

The stock Turbo setup can support ~250-260HP fairly easy without too many modifications. That will get you to 60MPH in the 5sec range and drop ~1-1.5 sec off the quarter mile.

I consider fast as how fast my track times will be, not ultra low drag strip times. The rx-7 can be built to handle dragging, autocrossing, & racing pretty well.

Here's a bit more info to help:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey welcome to rx7club.com.

The best thing about rx-7s is they're 100% designed as TRUE uncompromising sports cars - not a "sports coupe" or "sports sedan."

The Turbo II model is a SUPERCAR and is the tuners DREAM CAR. Mazda designed the car's drivetrain with 450HP in mind but detuned to 200bhp. What that means is you can GO NUTS building an inexpensive Porsche killer. And unlike the American entry level "sports cars," the Turbo II is designed as a track car with MUCH better handling.

The rotary engine is PERFECT for a sports car and Mazda designed the rx-7 to take 130% advantage of it.

High RPMS, wide & tall powerbands, near unlimited revving, lightweight engine, perfect 50/50 balancing, and low drag, are just some of the advantages the rotary engine provides.

Handling is the BEST part of the rotary experience. The chassis has rear steer found on some Porsches, so you can kick some serious butt around the corners. The car handles & drives so well - it inspires you to push the car beyond what you think it's capable of

Best of all, the rx-7s have an international following from tuners, manufacturers, enthusiast, and Mazda. That means you have a wide selection of performance upgrades, engine upgrades, accessories, bodykits, coffeytable books, toy models, gas powered rotary R/C cars, and knowledgeable people.

The RX-7 community is really that large

I guess it depends on what you determine is "FAST" or "REALLY FAST." This is how I see it...
FAST = 15.00 -to-12.50 1/4 mile
REALLY FAST = 12.50 -to- 10.5 1/4 mile
Anything slower is "quick" and anyting faster is insane/deadly/crazy/amazing/etc

So if you want a REALLY FAST car, then the S13 isnt' for you unless you want to do a VG30DET or RB25DET or RB26DETT swap, and the RX-7 isnt' for you unless you want to put on a huge turbo and make over 450 rwhp.
Either way it's a minimum $25,000 investment.

From reading your post, I think you should get the S13. Honestly, I love RX-7s, but it doesn't seem like you know quite enough about them to own one with modifications. No offence, but the rotary is extremely finicky and must be maintained very properly and I don't want to see you wrecking one or getting yourself into money troubles with a broken car due to this reason.
The S13 will do what you want it to. If you are shooting for 250-300 hp range, then just get the S13. Maybe in the future when you have more money, or have learnt lots of information about rotaries you will be prepared to step up to some serious performance.

The RX-7 is better for performance, but I just dton' think it's the best car for you right now.
Hopefully this helps.

I was just in england a few months ago, and what they call fast over there is a little different..they all have peogut 306, and 206. they arent that fast at all.... so id think a stock na would give any of your average street ricers out there a run for their money. Plus, gas is soo much over there... rx7s suck it down... my 2 cents
