Unhappy I spun out and nearly died!

Yesterday I was on the onramp towards a busy highway in Toronto. I was in 2nd and I decided to speed up a little and thats when the tail just kicked out and then I braked, 360, stalled, then skidded to a stop and lightly bumped the curb.
After taking a breather and counting my blessings that the cars behind me didn't smash into me, I cranked her up again and went home. I didn't hear anything funny and I checked the rear of the car and found no dents or nothing.
It was drizzling a bit and I have 225 Toyo Proxes FZ-4s skins which I bought 2 months ago all around.
Are these tires crappy?? I just dished out $750 Cdn for these!!
Should I bring the car into a shop and get the car checked out??
am I over reacting?!?!?!

Sounds like you need to learn how to drive a RWD sports car. Go find an empty, safe parking lot next time it rains, and go practice. Then you dont killl yourself, and youll learn a lot about driving.

The Tires are fine - you braked when you shouldn't have, you should have counter steered into the slide and stayed on the power! (the essence of DRIFTING), Practice slides & spins in an empty parking lot next time it rains. From the description of your actions I'll bet the spin was in the oppsite Direction from the initial slide?

The ramp had a mild right turn onto the highway and I spun around clockwise.

Then you were well and truly into the spin before you hit the brakes & I doubt you could have saved it even with lots of opposite lock

Check the position of the front wheels on the drifter in your avitar - thats how you hold a slide!

Dont hit the brakes, if anything, just lift, but staying on the gas to do a full drift takes a lot of *****. My car jumped sideways last week, I countersteer and lifted, not hte proper way to do it. but I wasnt going fast enough to do anyrthing stupid

Its not the tires, its you. Learn how to drive a RWD sports car, with a decent a mount of power, and you'll be fine. It gets tricky in the rain, we've all been there and done that.

You really need some practice in driving a precision sports car in the rain. Until then, avoid downshifting into 2nd in the rain...

I have new tires and shocks......been driving since 1979.... and no other car (in my opinion)can be as touchy as the 2nd gen in wet roads....... I spun 180 just like you did, getting off on an exit which had a slight slant and turned to the right.....going about 40 in 3rd gear....next thing I was facing oncoming traffic....Still love this car though........

I would like to think I am an experianced driver, but as with many things that can be left up to interpretation.....I have never wrecked any of my cars, but have lost control in many occasions where I was able to correctly counter-steer and avoid a crash or accident....still.....this car is as touchy as it comes in wet roads.....my .2 cents

Video games are teh answer

Go out, buy a play station 2, buy Gran Turismo 3, in game buy/win the 2nd gen RX7 turboII (infini), put simulatioin tires on it, put it on manual transmission, and take it out for a spin.

Truly amazing how realistic it is, without mods you should be able to beat the Sunday cup (try not to crash), and if you're real good the club man cup.

I can honestly say that the first time I started to lose it while driving my TII (real one) on a wet road while taking a tight corner and accelerating just a tad (maybe a bit more then a tad) too much, I knew how to bring it back just from having played GT3 wayy too much. Surprised the heck out of me, I've only owned FF commuter cars before.

There's a possibility that your problem is suspension related. I just recently discovered a improperly installed rear lateral link on my 87turboII. Yours could be someother thing. I jacked the rear and grabbed the fore and aft side of my r/h rear tire and jerked in and out with it. It had a lot of slop which created a lot of toe out on that side. The Richard Head that had installed the lateral link had put grease in the tapered socket joint where the rear end of the lateral link ties to the hub. Needles to say when he screwed on the nut the ball joint did not pull down into the taper. He left it like that. Showed up in the rain real good. Not so much in the dry unless I was real aggressive. So look for slop in the rear and the front. Bad ball joints etc. You sound like you know how to correct a spin. The 87N/A I have is great in the rain. Limited Slip helps. I've a 82rx that is treacherous, by the way.

I haven't played any of the Grand Turismo games, how realistic are they compared to high-end PC Sims?

My personal favorite for realism is Grand Prix Legends. Based on the '67 F1 season (last season before aero packages), those cars are interesting to drive. They're squirly as hell, have VERY hard tires and could go 200mph. I highly recommend this game to everyone. I know it's made me a better driver. You must master the 4 wheel drift, sliding, torque steering and recovery or you'll never finish a lap.

yeah, I spun out in mine not too long ago turning left at a stop light. I didn't get on it very much at all, but I still ended up spinning around and facing the oncoming traffic. It was really scary to say the least! Oh well, anyway, I drove my RX in the ice and slush today, and it behaved very well...(I was surprised). Luckily, I didn't have another accident today (some lady hit me yesterday and took out my left front fender and my alignment a little bit). Anyway, yeah, I understand about how these are touchy like that in the rain/wet. Just watch that rear end...and there's no shame in going slower for safety! Just my $.02

A little bit more off the subject

Gran Turismo 1 for the Playstation one is a better driving sim then any other single game or series for any platform I've played (haven't played project Gotham yet, so I can't comment on that one)

GT3 is at least twice as good as 1, the graphics are incredible, all the cars look, sound, handle accurately. As you mod them they improve realisticlly, and once you get the full race components going you can tune them realisticly.

I could literally praise this game for hours, so I'll stop now.

it's good, I love driving my car in it

these cars can definitly be trickyt sometimes in the rain. just the other day i was foolin around coming out of my bank, and wanted to throw the rear out a little for fun. kinda got outa hand and i went almost out sideways in two directions before it went straight and shifted.

i think hittin the brakes is definitly a bad thing to do when you are going into a slide. especially on snow. i guess you can also learn a lot from doing doughnuts in a big open parking lot. teaches you what to expect from the car in a slide or spin.

I agree that parking lot training helps. Too bad cops are dicks about it and don't see things the same way. We always got busted by experimenting in open and safe parking lots. I agree that they are a little fishy in wet conditions. I found that out the first time I drove it in the rain. I didn't wreck, but I'm sure I could have. I just slid a ways and kept on going. Kinda fun if you know what to expect

The Toyo Proxes FZ-4's are good tires, but they're not going to save you from EVERYTHING. I had them on my convertible--225/50/15--when I still had the 89-91 turbo and went around a curvy on ramp at around 70 mph when I hit a patch of ice. The tail went out ALOT, but I countersteered and got it under control. You just have to stay calm and avoid using the brakes. All you're going to do is lock the front wheels and skid.

Now that I have the T-78 turbo the car will do that when it's dry out, but that's ok.

If you were in 2nd in a rt. turn on-ramp you were probably in the meat of your torque band. If you're in this range and it's wet, apply gas gradually and gingerly opposite steer to compensate. It sounds like you stepped into a bit too much.

Better tires in this scenario probably wouldn't have helped much

Practice at limit when it's dry and decipher if you're car is oversteering or understeering. Tune your suspension based on that. Generally, if you have a smaller rear sway bar or softer shock/spring settings in the rear this will induce understeer. The stiffer things are in the back, the more likely it is to oversteer (stepout). Make sure your tire pressure is constant, and after you get the car to set in corners the way you like it you could also tweak by adjusting tire pressures.

I like to drive my car the way it was intended but when it's wet, I ease up.

I almost wrecked my car when one day it was drizzling and I mushed on the gas to see if i can make my tire screech. This cars have so much torque that its hard to control them when the road is wet. Its RWD so be carefull next time.

I almost got into a crazy spin the other day, it was raining a whole lot. I didnt touch the brakes and countered out of it, luckly it was on a pretty empty road. I slowed and still sliding, hit the curb at a slow speed. got out, no damage luckly not even my crappy rims

later,

Practice in some parking lots or if you have to on some empty side streets. Test the limits of your car in the conditions. Just don't lock up the brakes or countersteer too much when you lose traction. And once you can control these slides you have entered the world of drifting.
