I need some honest opinions here

ok so i just bought this 91 vert with 91K on the engine, it seems to have been taken care of pretty well but a few things have me concerned. every once in a while when i hit a corner really hard i hear a wierd high pitched noise from somewhere areound the rear suspension. i think i need new brake pads all around. and the clutch makes some weird noises sometimes when im shifting moderatly hard. i have a slight gas smell in the car when its been sitting for a while (full cooldown)when i turn it on but it goes away after a while.it idles evenly but its slightly rough at the same time, stays between 700-775RPM. the oil on the dip stick looks brand new, the dipstick doesnt have any residue at all from burned oil or anything. i do hit the occasional redline, once or twice a week to burn carbon. now, the real question, should i expect a rebuild soon and how much does it cast ot have a mazda tech do it for me. unfortunatly i dont know much about rotaries and would not attempt my self. or would another rebuilt be the way to go. its a non turbo, which counts for a little. i love this car and have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon but i am on a tight budget most of the time and would like to anticipate this as much as possable. thank you for any help and please ask me if i forgot to mention anything or if you need to know something.

This needs to be looked at ASAP! Before your car burns down!

To clarify if you are getting a strong gasoline smell you should inspect the area around the fuel pulsation damper. This is on the passenger's side of the engine compartment. The pulsation damper is round shaped object on the primary fuel rail. If that is leaking fuel or there is a puddle below it on the engine, do not drive the car anymore until you get it fixed.

Also, check all rubber lines that go to the fuel rails and return to the gasoline tank. Take special note of the rubber line going into the fuel filter as I have noticed that this line tends to crack and leak fuel more often than others. Probably this is because it has more chance to be exposed to road debris/fluids.

EDIT: Although it is not as common for the S5 FPD to go bad, it does happen. I believe that the whole rail needs to be replaced when it is on an S5. Do not quote me on that however.

Check the Pulsation dampener this is probly a leading cause of car fires burning to a crisp. Check all fule lines and the injectors.

A rebuild from tech around 850 in labor plus parts so figure 2k to 2.5k Personaly I would contact kevin landers at http://www.rotaryresurrection.com The problem with rebuilding a high milage engin is you get the chance of over warn irons and so on but not to discurage you at all they may be in perfect condition only pulling it down and diling it will tell you.

no, it is a bad misconception to think that only the S4 PD has a problem... if the PD is leaking (as can happen on any fuel injected 13B) you will need to replace the whole primary fuel rail on a 89-91.

But even if the issue is some other problem, do not drive if you smell gas. Smelling gas while driving is a bad bad bad thing.

First check to see if the Pd is actually defective. Gas smell could mean anything... injector orings, fuel lines, even check to see if the access plate for the FP is secure.

On the engine rebuild issue, yea go with Kevin like the above post says. If you can change a piston engine, you can change a rotary. Changing a "short block" the rest of it is very similar to any other motor and gives you a chance to chack out the PD, six port operation and lots of other small stuff while you're at it.

Clues=He said that the car smells of gas when it has been sitting for a while. Could the injectors be leaking down the pressure from the fuel rails???

Tournapart, is it sometimes hard to start?? This could be due to a leaky injector allowing fuel to trickle in until the fuel pressure drops in the lines.

While the top is down, have you ever given it a lot of gas only to smell a strong fuel smell for a short time after?? This could be caused by bad o-rings on the actual injectors and fuel could be squirting out.

Check the Pulsation Dampner, a new one is around 175. You don't need a fuel rail but you may need new lines. They are 12 years old and subjected to higher temps than most cars.

If you jsut want to get a Mazda tech to put in a new motor. It will cost you over 2k. YOu should look at the periferral items on the motor. Your current motor may be fine for another few years.

Of course sign on to this board daily. This is your best freind

what do you mean by this? Remember you in a convertable so alot of the fumes from the exhaust flow righ into the car, Your injectors are in plan view on the passangerside so you can see if they are leaking. Pop the hood and run the car see if it leaks durring high rpm as well as low and "cooldon". Can you give a better description of the sound you are hearing as well.

its never hard to start up but sometimes when i start it takes a second to achieve a stable idle, mostly dropping down in rpms, once it died. the sound fron the suspension is hard to describe, almost like woooooooot, its wierd. i have to drive my car to work tomorrow and the soonest i can take it to a mazda tech is friday, i guess ill have to take my chances until then.

the FPD seems to be fine, i think i may have a leaky fuel injector though, still need to test but im pretty sure thats the culprit here. thanks for the help.
