I think I disagree

I beg to differ.

I drive an 86-88 so I don't compare to the newer taillights and, thus, would not hesitate to put some decent altezzas on there. Yes, I could just get the 89-91 lights, but why not step it up and have people say "wow, those are sweet"?

Furthermore, changing the appearance of my car's exterior would indeed set the car apart from the crowd. Well it is true that the crowd of 7's is not nearly that of the civic (or accord, camry, etc.), there are quite a few stock n/a 7's in my area. Frankly, I don't want to be associated with any of them. Most of the 7's I see have rusted stock tips, incredibly dulled paint, and a driver who thinks he has pistons. When I wave at a 7 and only get a blank stare back, it doesn't make me feel proud to know that I'm driving the same car as that person. So if I have a mild body kit, some different taillights, and maybe a small wing, who's to say that I'm just like those beater 7's?

As for interior mods, they are quite sweet. I have now added some aluminum accents around my center console (one small sheet houses my stereo and four toggles, I'm working on another to put the vents in) and I get frequent compliments. I fully intend to add high-quality white face gauges that light up blue as I plan to accent my entire blue interior with white. When I install my accessory gauges, they too will be white and housed in aluminum. These mods allow my passengers to see that I do care about my car since they take a long time to make nice and they are fairly inexpensive, so I can do them just about all the time. I don't think I need to comment on getting new seats and a new steering wheel as the advantages there are clear.

Engine bay mods (we're talking dress-up here) are not all that bad either. When I pop my hood, I would like to see some color in there. It's no fun to have a stock bay with nothing but a little bit of shine coming from the throttle body. I like to see some other stuff, too. Such as a strut tower brace that is somewhat reflective, bright underdrive pulleys, good-looking plug wires, maybe some accents here and there. This is a dangerous area, though, as too many so called "ricers" go overboard and add things like a different oil dipstick. Completely unneccesary. But a little never hurts.

In conclusion, a car is meant to be an expression of self, and if I want to express myself by using clear marker lights, white face gauges, and a new hood, so be it. There is no need to tell someone that they are doing it wrong if they are sincerely trying to do what they like and not what everyone does.

I like my car to look good, and however that is accomplished in my eyes is fine.

My $0.02

Yo,

Man, I try and form a logical argument why clear tail lights and big wings/tips are clearly derivative of trademark styling elements of other cars and I'm called a "hater". Please.

Clear tail lights were pioneered by the Toyota Altezza. That's why clear tail lights are often known as "Altezza's". Check the title of the this post. The clear tail light concept was a fresh and new departure for the Altezza.

But once that stylistic element has been done, and is associated with a specific car, that's it. It's Been Done. And it was done, by the Altezza. Anyone else that uses clear tail lights on their vehicle is simply copying that VERY specific style. A trademark style. Of a very specific vehicle. Which is NOT your car. Do you understand what I'm trying to say?

Civic with giant hoop wing, and giant tip: Wannabe Supra.

Prelude with clear tail lights: Wannabe Altezza.

CRX with fender gills: Wannabe Z3.

That clear copying of obvious styling cues from other, usually much more expensive, more capable vehicles strikes many as blatant automotive plagiarism. I happen to be one of those people.

Id love to get a set of altezzas..To each his own about tatse or looks..

Then again im a car guy that modds his cars..many people buy a car and live off itsrep as it is..Thats nice and all but its no reason toflame anyone..I dont like rice cars but ive been in the car thing way long to remember preveous forms of rice..

The key word is custom..So what if someone else has the same setup..No one here with any bolt on part can say his car is one of a kind..Even with true custom add ons you arent the 1st and wont be the only..Ive seen this from 7s all the way to my 19080 malibu with flushed 300zx door handles..Was at a show and saw the same car with celica handles..

as for the later lamps i cant see spending the cash to buy them..To me its the same as the guy buying the 400s and pulling off the emblems telling people its a 600...makes me laugh..On one end you can claim that they look better and thats why you did it but then you did attemp to modify your car and update its look...

To each his own...Thats what makes this hoobie one of the best..
If not then we'd all be driving around in stock cars looking like dorks.

Then I guess I'm a dork, because my car is stock and I like it that way.

Yo,

Sniper_X, your line /was/ good. *grin* I just try and hit it from the logical point of view, instead of emotional. I'm not saying people /shouldn't/ be allowed to stick Altezza clear tailights, a Supra giant wing, or Z3 fender gills on their RX-7's, just for /me/, it makes the car looks like a SupRraXezza 3. *grin* If that's the look you're going for, more power to you. I happen to take pride in my Mazda roots and styling elements that MAZDA came up with. Not Toyota or BMW. That make any sense?

I guess what gets me most about the radical, AKA "rice" modifications to the RX-7 is that I think I am a bit more aware of the rare nature of these cars, and how they are leaving the road on flatbed trucks at an alarming rate.

I just don't want to be left with all these pink, purple, green bass boat lookin' rotary cars that won't go over speed bumps, are missing a windsheild wiper arm 'cause the bright orange passenger arm is stiking halfway up the windshiled, and someone has had the foresight to paint the enitre interior plastic yellow to match thier girlfreinds' favorite pair of panties.

Half baked modifications that incorporate more parts from HOME DEPOT than from a specialty shop, and you cant drive the damn thing without making sure the 200 MPH LEAF BLOWER MOTOR is firmly seated into the dryer duct intake tube!

I want to go to a car show in 10 years and not be lumped in with a bunch of children that had no idea what kind of legacy they were molesting just so that they could have clear/blue backup lights and a set of air scoops on the top of the passenger compartment.

Mykl, if thats what you like but dont expect anyone else to feel the same way if you differ..Personally i wouldnt give your car a second look if i saw it because its stock..Thats just me..Aparently we are in different views of the car hobby and thats all good..
Some cars with some people look perfect the way they are stock..Hell my SHO never got any mods other than tranny and engine upgrades..I could never find a rim that looked better than the stock 16"ers..I wouldnt expect any gearhead to look twice at it nor did i care..

As for them supra wings that make every car look like an oversized shopping cart i dislike them, even on the supra..When i attend ricer shows and see mods that have been executed succsefully with attention to detail i as well as anyone else who has ever lifted a torch, plasma cutting or mig welder and played with mud should understand the feat and give the guy the thumbs up..Weither it be horrid white face gauges or altezza taillamps that were just bolted on or a frenched antenna to closing the gaps in the body panels to 1/8".

WE ALL AGREE THAT THE RX7 IS, WITHIN ITSELF, A RARE BEAST.

Why buy a car, any car, and then try to make it look like something else. Sure be different, but don't de-face the rarity of the "RX7". If anything it's a collectors item, at least for me it is. "Say Sniper X, are you a poet?" It's an RX7 for god's sake... it's not just another import, if you know what I mean. Everyone wants to be different, heck I do. I sure don't want anyone else to have the same "identical" thing that I have. There are alot of car enthusiasts, there are posers, there are those who trully love their cars but there are those who "UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF THE BEAST(RX7)". Heh, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... have you had someone come up to you and ask if your rx7 was a honda? In any case, who ever said it, "TO EACH HIS OWN".

see ya,

haha, I didn't read most of these posts, gotta go to bed soon, but I'm sure someone said this:

buying altezzas is NOT different.... Sorry but you are Just like everyone else when you get altezzas haha, If you REALLY want to be unique, with ANYTHING, make it yerselfand don't sell it.. Now if you want yer car/truck to look like a civic, pop on altezzas...

people have their priorities.... I love the way my 86 looks stock, and I put all my money in POWER and handling mods, Others put all their cash in show...

But to clear SOME things up, altezzas do not make yer civic sportier, makes you look like everyone else..

Oh, and BTW, seeing Stinking Suburbans with altezzas? WT# is that? OMG I bet you wish you didn't buy that big ol nasty truck.. and got a civic... dumbcrap...

That's fine, because in *stock* trim my car draws tons of attention and compliments every time I drive it to any local car meet. It's called simple beauty. It draws attention because it's not flashy, but it's still beautiful.

On one side of one of these meets we've got all the retarded ricer types with their ugly *** wings, vinyl, etc., etc. On the other side we've got the American guys with their Corvette's, Mustangs, and f-bodies. Then there's me, a guy driving an import, but it doesn't look retarded like all the others in attendance, it looks clean and tasteful.

I can appreciate a nice, tasteful custom job. But when it gets to the point that it's just overly flashy and totally outlandish, then I don't car how much skill it took to make it the way it is, it's not getting a thumbs up from me.

just to make a reply thats pertinant to the original post:

SOoooo, does anyone know where the dude can get some IS300 lights? :

also, i dont think Rice is dictated by 'altezzas' or 'clears', i think RICE is dictated by the simple saying "all show and no go"

ive seen Wayyy to many Civic Si conversions w/ just the Si badge. and too many w/ Body kits, wings, lights, rims...but not so much as a CAI or DTM on the back of it. now THATS rice.

a 7 w/ clears is ok, its more unique than the stockers that the 43 yr old man who is stuck in middle management, worried about being forced into retirement, w/ a daughter in Jr high who is rebelling by sleeping w/ every guy in the zip code has on his 7. it also bugs me when people buy cars like ours, and dont even Appreciate it, they dont know what a great thing they got.

and i LOVE how rare these cars are, relatively speaking. i mean, i was at University of Toledo, and i got a parking ticket. the funny thing was, my car was classified as "OTHER" cuz they couldnt figure out what it was.

* THATS WHAT WE SHOULD BE GOING FOR *

we would like people to take notice of our car (albeit, for different reasons, but NOTICE nonetheless) there are different methods of doing it:

1. Mykl's method: the Cleanest, most original example of an RX7 you could find
2. Sniper X's method; All go and no show, something that will only get a second look because it just blew your doors off, or left you in the twisties.
3. Canadian's method: more Show than Go, all the uniqueness is located on the exterior, rather than in the motor, transmission, and suspension. where it is better suited to cruisin the Blvd @ 4mph so everyone can see u drive by, and say 'DAAaaaammn, thats Tight yo' (possibly followed up by a "dude, is that a Civic?!" question)
5. MY METHOD: ALL GO, and Enough show to set you apart from the Mykl-methodists. concentrate on the Sniper-X method, and mix in a little Canadian method. and you got something that will blow the doors off alot of other cars, and look flashy while doing it. i like to have power to back up all my flashy/go-fast exterior parts.

one of my commandments is NEVER put on a sticker that advertises a part that you dont have. so, in light of that, i have APC, NGK, K&N, Permacool, Accel, PIAA, Mazdaspeed, and Mazdatrix parts on my car. and i am a member of www.RX7club.com. but if u see these stickers on my 7, dont call me Ricer, cuz i HAVE a part or modification, or evidence to back up each sticker.

Another commandment: never add anything to your car that will make it SLOWER than it was meant to be from the factory.

EXAMPLE: after you put 200 lbs of fancy fiberglass, paint, and fasteners on your car, you need an intake and exhaust just to put you back to factory performance levels.

chris

btw, this guy> cracks me UP, funny azz ****!!!! couldnt stop laughing Felix.

this guy has a good point... my .02 is that if u wanna do it go ahead. Like most other things... Dont give a damn what others will think of your car, if it makes you happy that u put clears on your car, then by all means do so. My car has a small dent that i need to get fixed near the rear tire where i had the tire tread literally rip off on its own goin 120 on a freeway and yet people still say my car looks very nice and had one guy offer me 3g's for mine even tho i brought it for 1950, and in amazing condition! So you know, whatever makes u feel good about ur car, go for it.
