I need brakes

I've got an 88 GXL, and I can't really do anything to it while it's outside covered in snow, but I wanted to get some stuff together for it while I've got some time.

It'll need new rotors/pads. What would you guys suggest for decent performance? I don't want to spend too much money though.

I did a search on the forum, and somewhere someone suggested Hawke HP for pads? I got a quote from somewhere for:

1988 Mazda RX7 (standard suspension)
HB152 (front) HP PLUS $55/set
HB158 (rear) HP PLUS $54/set

What else would you guys suggest? Is that about the best bang for the buck?

If you have a GXL - you'll need the pads for the "Upgraded Suspension" - not the standard suspension that you have listed there. The standard suspension has the 2 piston brakes, while the GXL is equipped with 4 piston ones.

I have an 86 GXL, and I bought a set of the Hawk HP's for my car. They are great - and I really like them. The prices that you have there are in US dollars, and are pretty cheap. If you call around your area, you'll get some pretty steep quotes - $150 CAD - $200 CAD range for front pads! I called around and finally got a front set for $85 CAD - a good deal as far as I am concerned.

I will say that if you get an agressive pad such as these - buy new rotors as well. Not Canadian Tire ones - something a bit better than that. I have KVR drilled rotors on mine, and they work well (if I could only fix my master cylinder) but I have heard good things about the OEM rotors too. Shop around, and you'll eventually find some good deals.

Yeah, I knew it was in american currency, actually it's from this place:

But what you paid isn't much more than what it would cost from that Raceshopper place. Was it a place local to yourself?

I have the hawk HPS, and I am very happy with them. Pad choice really depends on what you want. The more aggressive you get with the pads, the less life your rotors will have. You can go from mild like the Hps's I have, to full blown race pads like the blues. My advice is If you are doing mostly street driving go with either Hps or Hp+'s. Either one of those two pads will more than likely get the job done.

Yeah, I got them from a store called Speedstyle Automotive Tuning. They have a website, but I don't know if it works!

Places like tirerack.com have those pads at $55 a pop as well - but once you factor in the cost of shipping and conversion, they are over $100 CAD.

Here's a tip:
If you ever order something from the US to be shipped to Canada - NEVER use UPS. They add on retarded brokerage fees. A $55 set of pads will cost you an extra $70 in shipping and brokerage! Always specify United States Postal Service. USPS charges a $5 flat rate. Might take longer, but well worth it!

I learned that from experience I bought a boost guage kit for my Audi A4, which was $115 US, they sent it UPS, and I got dinged for $60 brokerage/taxes.

And that was getting off good. A guy from another forum I go to bought a PDA off of Ebay, and paid $70 on brokerage ALONE for a $60 PDA... just sick. I'll ALWAYS use USPS from now on.

I got my stuff from nopionline.com I bought the Brembo rotors for the front and metal masters brake pads all around. I also got the SS brake lines from mazdatrix.com which were the cheapest and are DOT approved to boot. Total spend was ~260 but I didn't turn the rear rotors as they were in ok shape. It was ~90 for the rotors 60 for the pads and 90ish for the SS lines.
