i have a trans problem.....................

so i bought a transmission from a guy, series5 turboII transmission said to have 80k miles and great syncros. we were about to bolt it to my engine today but forgot that i needed a new rear main seal, so while we were checkin out the transmission we decided we'd put the shifter in and make sure it would shift through the gears and everything.

it seems the trans is stuck in 4th gear. at the same time, the shifter will let us select 1st and 2nd gear, but no others.
to make sure, we left the shifter in neutral and rotated the input shaft and the output shaft was moving at the same speed (which makes us think its 3rd or 4th gear, about a 1:1 ratio)
then we put the car in gear, first or second, and turned the input shaft, the output shaft wouldnt turn

is there something we are doing wrong? we put the shifter in my NA trans and it lets us select every gear. also when we left the NA trans in neutral and turned the input shaft the output shaft did not turn....

When the selector rod interlocks get worn, it becomes possible to select 2nd & 4th simultaneously.
Then usually only 2nd pulls back to neutral.

Select 2nd, push the lever to the right, & try to pull 2nd & 4th out together.

sounds kind of like this

except you have the 3/4 fork engaged. You shouldn't be able to select 1st and second though due to the lock out pin. Could be worn I suppose.

i think the 3/4 fork got engaged during shipping. im sure its possible for the fork to slide in if you stand the trans up on its bellhousing and bump it enough times.. right?

Alright what I did to mine to pop it out of gear was loosen the bolts on the side of the tranny.. they will have a spring in them so be carefull not to lose it. I then just played around with the shifter and it poped out of reverse..

But 5h and reverse still didn't work so I swaped it. I haven't had time to open it up to see what went wrong.

Good luck.
