I have an 88 Gxl n/a all stock how many ports do i have? AND what are they?
are ports air openings? and where are they located on motor or UIM? i hear people talking about them but dont know much. i only open the hood to check oil water and tranny and to fix hoses i saw a post about someone Wiring 5 and 6 port shut to get better gas milage. not sure if its electrical or machanical

There are 6. They are the number of ports that the engine has to suck in air. The turboII has 4. On a N/A, two (on each end of the block) are controlled via 'sleeves' that open and close the air path, this allows more torque at lower rpm, and increased flow after 3800rpm. These are the 5th and 6 ports. Wiring them will RUIN performance. It's best to leave them functioning as they are, unless your engine is ported/turbo/etc.
Don't do the wire the 5th and 6th ports open thing. I've only seen problems. Anyways they are located on the passenger side of the block above the exhaust manifold. But the manifold is covering it so obviously you won't see the actual ports.

If the low-end sucks, it's possible that they are stuck in the open position. Search for aux ports or '5th 6th ports' and you'll find more than enough information about them, or you can check the archive, I think there's a guide on cleaning them.
