I can't lock my doors!!
OK so I just bought an 88 RX7 vert. I bring it home and go to lock up and the ignition key doesn't work in the door locks or the glove box. I assume Mazda made 2 seperate keys but the previous owner tells me he only had the one key (don't know where he got the car or how long he had it). My question is did mazda make 2 seperate keys and if so what can i do? If i give a mazda dealer the VIN can they make a key 4 me or something? thanks

its one key for all the locks i have a 90 vert and one key that works for all the doors, trunk and the car itself i would just get new locks at www.mazdatrix.com they sell a kit that come with 2 keys, 2 locks for the door , one for the ingition and i think one for the trunk
who ever own the car before probly got the ignition changed and lost the old key for the doors
hope this helps

To my knowledge, there is only one key, i have had 3 2nd gens and all have one. There is a way to make an extra key. You have to remove one of the locks from your car (better if you take it to a professional) and I have noticed its easier to remove the trunk lock. There are very tiny numbers written on the actual lock mechanism and some locksmiths can make you a key based on these numbers.
Also, I have noticed that some mazda locks wear out and they are really really picky as to how you insert the key. One time I spent 25 minutes outside trying to unlock my car. try pushing the key evenly upwards then turning it once its in the lock. I sorta had to learn the trick to my locks. If not have a locksmith make you a key. It will run you around $50 bucks, i believe they also need the vin number.
Good luck

The vert has 2 keys. The normal ignation key black head and a square valet key...Don't listen to the TII guys, they throw that kind of stuff away to save weight!
Valet key will not work in glove box or trunk. It will lock the driver side door when you turn clockwise.
Three keys, 91 origional black head, 89 ig Home Depot blank[do not have valet key for 89], 91 origional valet. Both the black head and valet have same 4 digit number on key shank near head.
Enjoy your car.

As you can see the valet has a solid end, while the regular key starts with a double cut on the end.
Hope this helps.
Sorry about the fuzzies, it is 3:45 AM in Hawaii!

I think I have the original key
Thanks 4 the info every1.
Dave do u think I should go 2 the dealer to try and get these xtra keys? My key has a black round head so I assume it is the original. Shouldn't it be able to open everything? I'm gonna go mess with it a little and take it 2 the dealer 2day. Thanks again!

Does the black head say Mazda and have four digits on the shank near the head?
Ignition key should open everything.
Just checked my 91 key will open the 89 door only...not vice versa...will not swop for ignition. Valet does not work on 89.

My key is round with a black head and has the four digits right below the black round head. I went to the dealer and they told me its possible the door locks were changed for some reason. The told me they can change the door locks for $40 a piece plus 3 hours labor which will be like over $200!!! What are my other options?
