How would an exhaust leak change the exhaust note of an 87 TurboII??

I have an 87 Turbo II with a 3" downpipe, 3" midpipe, and 3" custom cat-back with a straight through muffler. My friend also has a TurboII with the same exact exhaust setup, muffler, and engine mods. But I noticed that our cars sound noticeably different at any given rpm. His is a lot deeper and louder than mine, especially at higher rpms, but we have the same muffler and piping, it should sound nearly identical right? I thought that until I noticed while I was having my oil changed and the car was lifted I started it while it was still on the lift. It smoked a little because we over-filled the oil a little bit, but from under the car I noticed smoke coming not only from the muffler, but from about 1 foot behind the muffler in the piping, which indicates a hole in the piping somewhere. So my question is, how would an exhaust leak like this effect the tone of my exhaust note? Is this why my car sounds noticeably different(and quieter?) than my buddies RX with the same exhaust? Thanks.

Thanks for the info. So did it make your exhaust note sound quieter, or did it just affect the tone? I know it seems strange, but since I've had this hole in the exhaust piping, it seems like my exhaust tone is noticeable quieter, and its not as deep as it used to be either. And it does sound a little like a weedwacker at higher rpms, the bass that used to be their is gone now.
