How... wha..... illuminated door lock?

OK I have a 1987 TII and I was looking at the option sheet and I saw that the illuminated drivers door lock was standard. What is that? I just went outside opened the door, turned on the ligths started it, put on the parking lights turned it off looked on the outside, opened it closed it lights on lights off. I checked all over the drivers door adn the only light I saw on it was the white and red to show others that the door is ajar or help you see the ground. Where is this illumintated door lock and does someone have a picture of it lit up because I am baffled.

On my GXL, the light is inside the keyhole. For me, it only comes on some times when you insert the key.

wait, there's a light inside a keyhole that comes on when you plug the hole with a key?

If you have your owner's manual I believe it shows a diagram of it. It doesn't work on mine but I'm going to look into it and see if I can fix it.

no I have ignition lumination, but look at the option sheet on this FAQ, it only came on the GXL and turbo models and were standard. Not options on any other model. So how is that useful if the light only comes on when the key is in the lock? How would you even see the light if the key blocks the keyhole?

Mine rarely works, but when it does it kicks on for a few seconds AFTER you pull up on the handle (before you hunted around to put your key in right? right? ). The one inside the car works even less often than that, and that's just a light that shines down upon the ignition key slot. '87 GXL, btw.

Lift the door handle to make the Key Hole light, light up.

Only found on GXL, Turbos, and some verts.

Also not uncommon for the bulb to be burnt out or bad after 10+ years of door slamming.

Seeing how my GXL came with no door handles... Nope, not for me... Does that mean that Mazda fucked me when I bought their $150 a piece door handles and an extra $50 cylinders... No lights anywhere, I should take them back, huh?

The bulb sockets are there regardless of if the car came equipped with luminating Key holes.

But if you don't have the harness and bulbs, well that sounds like your problem of missing things that the car should have come with. The bulbs don't come with the door handles when you buy just door handles and key cyls.

Yep,even 1st gens had that.

Theres a micro switch on the inside of the driver's door handle.Lift the outside handle and the little keyhole "door" that covers the slot will light up.The door is clear plastic and theres a small incandecent light bulb behind it.Its so you dont scratch up the paint searching for the key hole.
The ignition switch light is connected to the dome light and comes on for a preset time after you open the door.

All this cool stuff is controlled by the CPU,which sadly is about as reliable as the 2nd gen's CPU and Logicons.....my ignition light works, but the outside key light hasent worked ever....

Probably burnt out bulbs rather than the CPU, as the Ignition Key hole light is wired to the same exact wires as the door Key hole light

I ha dmy lock cylinder replaced and when there's no key in the hole he keyhole is blocked off, but it's by a pale blue plastic little flapper thing. If ym bulb is just bad and I replace it will the light shine through this?

I took a spare neo wedge t4 bulb I had, removed it from the socket, and hard wired it in. Come to think of it, I forgot to check if it actually worked.

Keep is posted if it works. For reference, the light in the key slot is a yellowish orange originally. It works perfectly on my 10AE and I can post a picture you can use for a reference color if you'd like.

When I replaced the one on the S5TII I used a grain of wheat bulb, but believe the original was white no tint.
