That will work

After thinking about it I figured it was the reason I had oil in my compreser housing. I emailed gpop and for$24 I will be getting a new one.

I wanted to flush and clean out my stock CHRA. Would it be ok soaking in purple power?

RotaryRocket88 01-17-12 01:52 PM

Purple power is a mix of two strong bases (sodium hydroxide and sodium metasilicate), so it's not something you want to use on aluminum parts. The cast portion of the CHRA should be ok (iron I believe), but bearings, the compressor back plate and associated parts should not be exposed to it. Honestly, you'll probably be better off with an organic solvent mixture like brake cleaner. It'll take care of the grease, but not react with certain metals.

I'm planning on running a 60-1 compressor wheel with matching T04b backing plate and.60 a/r comp housing. My question pertains to the turbine wheel. Will I be alright leaving it just as it is? I've read that people typically have the turbine clipped to reduce back pressure/help with boost creep. Where can i have it clipped? Is it necessary to take them to specialized turbo shops?

Justen 01-25-12 11:00 PM

^I just sent my turbine shaft and compressor wheel to BNR for clipping and balance.
I was initially against the idea of clipping. But I guess a little bit of lag is a just small sacrifice if it means you'll be keeping your boost levels under control.

younG_Gunner 01-25-12 11:13 PM

^^^how much did that run you?

Justen 01-25-12 11:21 PM

Quoted me at $80 for a full rotating balance and 10*degree clip

thats not bad.

Did you send the CHRA or just the rotating assembly?

Justen 01-26-12 01:20 PM

Yeah its not a bad at all, considering most places will charge ~$60 for just a balance anyway.
All I had to send was the Turbine wheel/shaft, the Compressor wheel and nut, and a 270-degree thrust collar.

This happened to me 2 weeks ago...

Attachment 758332

I forgotten to tighten it an extra 1/4 turn *major face palm*, nut came off and bounced around like a pinball.

The wheel is fused to the turbine shaft or something, its damn hard to take off.
Now I need another 60-1 wheel and a to4b housing for it and attempt this hybrid again lol

I wonder if BNR will machine out the stock S5 turbine to fit a Ptrim wheel for me...

RotaryRocket88 01-28-12 06:51 PM

Ouch. Was it torqued down, or just tightened by feel? Any locktite on the threads?

turbocity.com only charges 35 bucks to balance turbos!

i just got done rebuilding my turbo with a 360 bearing but for some reason it has play on it unlike the stock thrust. the holes that go into the CHRA on the 360 is slightly larger than the 270.

bumpstart 01-29-12 05:18 AM

you have to tap and grub screw the 360 to the CHRA, different setup to the 270 with spider washer

torqued and red locktite on the threads.

I guess that extra 1/4 turn really made the difference....
On my stock turbo rebuild, I did the 1/4 turn and a month of 12 psi and drag racing, it is fine.

Lesson learned, always 1/4 turn it. According to Gpop, its a 1/8 turn if the threads are counterclockwise to tighten.

Yeah, would have just done that if I wasnt going for the radial turbine wheel grinding/clipping. oh well.

198713bt 01-31-12 03:18 PM

Alright guys, I just bought a turbo for super cheap off ebay and measured the compressor wheel. 70mm compressor exducer, 45.6mm compressor inducer. The inducer seems too small to make any kind of a hybrid, but I wanted to check with you guys first. Any thoughts?

Black Knight RX7 FC3S 01-31-12 05:56 PM

that compressor wheel is just a tad bigger then the stock turbo.
Not worth it to do a hybrid with that wheel.

198713bt 01-31-12 06:32 PM

Thats what I figured. Know of any other car market that could benefit from a turbo that size? AKA someone I can sell it to? haha

hiroichi1515 02-01-12 01:33 PM

I accidentally had my wheel clipped when I built my hybrid. When I took it to have balanced they did it without asking. I really dont like the lag but I have gotten used to it. I was hoping I can compensate for it with a stronger wastegate actuator but I have yet to remove the turbo to install one.

How do you guys feel about a 60-1 comp wheel/stock turbine combo? See any foreseeable issues with this?

brian_skotch 03-02-12 09:55 PM

Any recent install pics guys? I'm interested in doing a hybrid with a v trim wheel as that seems pretty popular. Is it possible to run an h trim wheel?

A 60-1 is typically paired with a P-trim turbine, so using a stock turbine will likely restrict top-end.

H-trim with matching compressor housing is a BNR stage 2. The problem will be finding a donor turbo with this wheel. They're not common, so you're pretty much left having to get the housing machined to match.

Finally, reinstalled the turbo. The front nut and the turbine shaft weren't ground so I presume that the turbo wasn't ever dynamically balanced. Marks were close. Going to be keeping a good eye on the compressor nut and more results to come. 14psi here we go!

gxl90rx7 03-19-12 02:06 PM

im running a 60-1 with factory turbine wheel and ive had no problems. full boost by 3k rpm and makes about 300whp at 15psi. this is with a TMIC and RB exhaust which probably restrict the power a little.
