Got my T04B stuff today all new.
Garrett backplate Comp turbo compressor Vtrim wheel China polished Vtrim compressor housing Total investment $157 so far. Attachment 716949 Attachment 716950 Attachment 716951 I just need to get it balanced, S bend the actuator rod, make a new bolt on flange for the actuator(water jet @ school :egrin:), rebuild kit, and Bore the wastegate, and convert it to external vent aka "wastegater" |
I assume you got the china-charger from Ebay. Which one did you choose?

Purchased - 1 Basic T3 Kit (Kit #3, Dynamic Seal Kit) $49.00
There was no mention of a 360deg thrust washer? Is it Standard? Sent email Called them they wanted $350 to rebuild and the local shop wanted ~$425. |
for a stock turbo? that's rediculous, i charge half that.

so 130 for the rebuild kit with 360 thrust and about 50-70 for a balance and the rest for labor.
$350 doesnt sound that bad, but spending around $200 for kit and balance and rebuilding it yourself is even better :P The 360 thrust washer shouldve been in the drop menu. |
I believe they thought the turbo was toast though, I did mention that it was just blowing oil and boosted ok. Standard t3 rebuild was $49+Shipping.
Does anyone(arghx) have any information for turbos w/ clearances and specifications to check/measure? Typical turbo bearing clearances? Thrust movement? I will search. Thanks |
Found a great article, "Checking out a turbocharger, by Paul Stenquist," in Popular Mechanics March 1991.
Key points from the article. For a T3 the Turbine Shaft Bearing Journals should measure 0.3997in. to 0.4000in. Previously rebuilt turbos may have 0.0010-0.0015in. undersized shafts, which they sell oversized bearings for. The bearing housing bore at the point where the turbine seal contacts it should measure 0.6220in. to 0.6223in. When assembled on the turbine shaft, the diameter of the turbine seal ringh (piston ring_ should measure 0.709in. to 0.711in. The compressor wheel nut should be tightened to 18-20in-lb. plus 90 degrees. Axial end play 0.001in to 0.004 in Radial bearing clearance(up and down movement of shaft) 0.0030in. to 0.0065in. Let idle for 3-4 min before test driving. |
Some good information, but I've had some bad luck with the gpopshop rebuild kit - basically only a couple parts were correct, and the new lock-nut holding the compressor wheel on refused to lock, and instead became a ricocheting object in the TID, tearing up the compressor wheel

Recieved my rebuild kit today(see attached image). Looks like everything is there.
Will be cleaning up everything this weekend and hopefully have it back in either this or next weekend. All of the parts from the kit fit except for the shaft nut and the compressor housing bolts. I also got a compressor housing seal with the kit, which I did not have before.
The retaining clips were a pain. I snagged a pick set that made it pretty easy to get them out... Found out that the turbo shop near me has a Heins TC-3 balancing machine, that only balances the turbine and compressor wheels separately, so no real point to have them 'balanced'. I can barely see my realignment marks after cleaning the parts, I got it close, but when torquing the nut the compressor wheel turns. I'm going to go ahead and just slap it back in after I get the marks to aligned. |
This is gonna be a dumb question...but I was looking on the gpopshop website and they have an ht18 specific rebuild kit. Would that make sense to use if you are rebuilding a stock turbo? <_<

i suppose this is a good donor for a hybrid? Im guessing the Comp wheel inducer is 48 mm. Says 48 at the bottom of the listing. Anyone know what wheel trim and expected power output these have?

When you have excessive wear to the thrust collar, rusted out (or missing) bolts or clamps, or some other weird scenario, that's when you'll want to opt for the complete kit.

Got my turbo rebuilt/highflow ... The shop i was getting the parts off gave me prices inclluding labour so in the end i just let them do it, $450nz.

Looks like a nice donor turbo. Getting everything all together like that really makes the conversion much easier. Sourcing matching wheels and housings separately can be tough with these obsolete turbos. Garrett dealers tend to not have any idea what a T04b is, let alone where to get parts.

Okay I got the kit from gpop every thing went fairly smooth... Until it came time to put the carbon seal in. I tryed putting socket over it and tapping it down. I ended up braking the carbon seal go figure. So my question is can I re-use the old one?

Are the s4 and s5 turbines the same size? I was thinking about building a hybrid out of an s5 I have but the turbine is chewed up. I was thinking about using the s4 turbine but not sure on the sizing. Can anyone please clarify?

yes its the exact same size.
The only difference between the S4 and S5 turbo is the turbine housing. |

You can reuse it if there is no damage or evidence of oil leaking through the compressor side. |
