Question How much should I save up before buying a TII?

I'll be starting to look for a TII in november. I have access to the school auto shop and any tools and lifts availible to me free of charge. To add to this I have a lot of assistance installing stuff, so labor is going to be absolutely $0.

I'm figuring I'm gonna be getting a TII with the original engine (preferably a blown one). Doesnt matter what year because I'll be dropping in a brand new engine anyway. The day I get it I'm bringing it into the shop right away. I plan on replacing all the hoses and swap most of the plastic parts with metal ones. I'm also going to rip out the entire exaust and replace it. This is the major thing.

When I'm done dropping in the new engine, new exaust, and all the hoses and misc stuff, I'm moving on to the body. Shaving off the keyholes and blasting the paint right off. If the car's red, I'm repainting it red. If its any other color I'm going with silver. While I'm at it I'll go ahead and get a body kit and have that put on all at once. Once that's done I'll just go pick it up and get some new wheels and do some interior work.

Considering what I plan on doing before I do any cosmetic work on it, what do you think I should save up? The car should run me around $3k if I can find one that I can at least drive back to my school and is in good overall condition (rust is not a factor in TX). How much would you think I'll end up spending when all is said and done (paint, wheels, etc). I plan on getting the RE Amemiya 2k kit, but the body kit is absolutely the last thing on my list. All I'm really concerned about is getting the car reliable.

Also, what engines can I swap in the car for about the same price as a j-spec? I want a new/faily new engine. Not a rebuilt one.

With all those things you want besides the 3k for the car I would say 10k. That may seem high but things usually run more than you expect, and you will mod the exhaust and probably start doing other things too.
