How much rust is acceptable?

I have some parts that have been in storage for a long time, and have started to rust. What are your opinions of this? Is it trash or is it usable? If it's usable, I want to sell it, because I have no need for it. Should I run a wire wheel on it to clean it up? There are no other defects, just rust. What do you guys think?

Looks pretty rusted and probably pitted. I wouldn't use it...

Thanks. I will probably clean it on the wire wheel and then see what it looks like. Can't hurt right?

That E-shaft looks way too pitted to be salvageable. But if you want to try, instead of using a wire wheel which will probably trash it further, I'd immerse the whole thing in EvapoRust or a similar rust dissolving solution. Let it soak for at least a day and then see where it gets you.

^^ I agree. Evaporust it, then put some fine emery paper on it to polish it up and then use a micrometer to see if it is still within spec. Pitting will grab your bearing material and cause high and premature bearing wear. IMO, I wouldn't use it.
