How much paint to do an FC?
Car painters who have painted second gen RX-7s, how much enamel does it take to do the body, engine bay, door jambs, under the hood and have some extra in case I mess up? I was thinking a gallon total so half gallon before being reduced. I am going for a simple enamel opaque with no clear coat . . maybe two coats over the primer.
Anyone have an opinion?

Engine bay and all the sheetmetal in the interior is getting painted single stage, and the whole outside is getting base coat/clear coat. Total cost for all the paint, and necessary thinners is right around $200.

gallon and a pint will do you fine.price is depending on what type of paint you are going to use.Remember price is depending on name.ppg, dupont, house of color,etc....Check around for pricing, dupont is probably what your looking for, house of color is expensive....in certain colors. You sound if you have some experience in the field on the way you ask certain questions as if your going to do it your self.Im a pro. in the field in paint and body work.My father restored cars as a hobby and he was an expert until he passed away.If you need any other q..s answered let me know that deal with paint!

I talked to a paint shop and said it would take 6-7 quarts, but I think he failed math because when I first called I asked him to tell me how much a gallon of pearl whit would cost and he said I wouldn't need that much, but then comes back to tell me that I need 6 quarts or so.

I will probably go with Napa crossfire enamel. It was recommended to me by a co-worker who does bodywork on the weekends. Looks like for a half gallon of the paint and necessary reducer and sealer it will be about $100.
I'm going to go a little lean on the coats of paint (couple coats) to save weight. I didn't know that those expensive HVLP guns were better . . looks like they pay for themselves over the course of painting a car though. What I have learned with enamel is that all it takes is two good coats done right to have it glassy smooth and opaque.
