$$ yeah Rx7 require money, save it then build it. its fun

djmtsu 06-14-07 07:24 PM

All in all I am still under $6000 including the car.

Plus I have extra parts like a ceramic coated S5 turbo and mani, doors, a fender, a hatch, 2 NA hoods, a full S4 interior, all the crap I removed and am still holding on to. a set of baloney cutters, and on and on and on.........

See sig.

FelixIsGod29X 06-14-07 07:36 PM

I can say i have spent about 3-4g's so far and about to spend another 2-3 to finish my car. Im only 17 now/soon 18, Its my first car but it has to be done right. Hell i have been through two other rx-7s, about to buy another and still wont be done with my dream car. All in all when my pride and joy that i created with my hands is done it will be so0o0o0 worth it

TitaniumTT 06-14-07 08:05 PM

Deep into the 20k mark but that's over the course of 10 years. Biggest is up now... Motec's are $$

ericgrau 06-14-07 08:14 PM

I budget a strict $300 a month for gas, repairs, maintenance, upgrades. I decreased the budget during about 5 months of school, so I'm probably up to ~$2500 or so now. Most of that is gasoline from driving almost 10,000 miles. The rest is maintenance items, body work, repairs (vandalism x 2). Haven't done any upgrades yet, but the car is fully restored now so I'll be upgrading soon.

I figured out all my planned upgrades and it comes to about $2500.

Syncro 06-14-07 10:57 PM

8k so far on a bone stock 86' GXL.

I'm restoring her :)

dwb87 06-14-07 11:58 PM

Wow... I am glad to see people are still posting on this thread. I am close to $11K now. (compared to the $8K when I started this thread... lol)

NoDOHC 06-15-07 12:04 AM

'86 GXL $400
New radio (old one was stolen) $20
New suspension bushings - $130
New tires - $245 (cheap kumho ecsta ASX)
New rear trim ($12.00)
New mufflers (FREE from a friend)
New wiper/headlight switch ($50.00) (high and intermittent still don't work)
Unbroken logicon and center console ($100)
Several oil changes ($35.00)
Rear diff fluid ($20.00)
ATF ($25.00)
New rear brake pads ($32.00)
Good front diff mount ($50.00)
AutoX tires - $150 (used BF goodrich pro comp R1s)
Miscellaneous wire/ screws/parts to fix Previous Owners mistakes ($50.00)
New intake boot over radiator ($20.00)

Grand total 1,339 dollars into a 21 year old car (that is an awful lot of fun to drive.)

This total does not include Insurance ($400/year) Inspection ($25/year) and Gas (I don't want to think about it.)

Osirus9 06-15-07 01:53 AM

lets see, bought an 87 TII for $2650 2 months ago w/ a blown motor.

I have spent about $3k (about $5k total) on it

rebuild/s5 turbo/flywheel/SAFC/cleaned injectors/fuel pump/delrin mounts/hoses/fluids/random interior pieces/blah blah blah...

but its almost done! I hope to start her up this weekend and if she cooperates then it was all worth it :D

magus2222 06-15-07 02:14 AM

uh, ya, update. sad thing is, i dont ever remember posting on this thread.
but all in all, as of right now, im prolly at ~3k, maybe more.
so, with both cars, ~7K

peace

WadeMCarter 06-15-07 03:37 AM

I'd say after the microtech is done, I'll be at about 6k in parts, labor etc.. + the car.

CyberPitz 06-15-07 08:06 AM

3250 - TII
20 - New OMP *still leaks oil...*
70 - New brake Pads

That's almost about it....there are a few here's and there's I don't remember, but jeez, I've got nothing in comparison to you guys :p

josh...just josh 06-15-07 10:47 AM

88 TII with blown coolant seals- $500
beer for pulling the engine/ rebuilding- $30

lots more to come...

adrock3217 06-15-07 10:58 AM

And this is the reason I will probably just end up buying an FD <.<

SpeedOfLife 06-15-07 11:11 AM

'87 TII: ~$1300
Registration: ~$100
Driving all over creation to find one: ~$500
The smile on my face when I spool that turbo and blaze down the road: priceless.

toplessFC3Sman 06-15-07 11:50 AM

$4000 - Ito rebuild (new housings, replaced rotor, plates etc)
$400 - original TII engine, turbo, manifolds etc
$150 - TII tranny
$300 - TII diff, halfshafts, driveshaft
$550 - Exhaust
$100 - Turbo rebuild kit
$500 - New leather seat covers
$700 - new top
$250 - Megasquirt, wiring components etc
$250 - LC-1 wideband and gauge
$500 - miscellanious parts, fluids, hoses, tools etc
$200 - new brake rotors, pads, SS lines
so about $7900 so far (damn, more than i thought)

and then $1900 - the car itself (88 'vert), so after $9800 I'll have a pretty nice turbo 'vert that needs paint and an FMIC, and i still need to do suspension

ouch

88rxn/a 06-15-07 11:57 AM

im glad to see im not the only one to dump 10K into my car!! :/
just when you think its almost done you remember all the other little things that you need. its a never ending battle to get a 20 year old car back to health!

TitaniumTT 06-15-07 11:59 AM

n00bs.... you need to at least be in the 5 digit range. Don't let your gf/wives see this thread. But if they do, you better be damned certain that whatever ring is on there finger better cost more than what you spent on the FC.

HA! her ring cost less than my TII, but a lot more than my first car. I'd call that a happy medium, and she loves the ring anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Furb 06-15-07 12:16 PM

with purchase of the car, i have spent a total of over 30k...
and still spending, cause i just made another order of about 5k

just had my FC rated for insurance issues, car was found to be worth 25500K

toplessFC3Sman 06-15-07 12:32 PM

yea, this thread should be hidden from non-members, just in case we get any wife/gf lurkers

yusoslo 06-15-07 01:44 PM

This is why I am selling my FC, cause I am in 11k now and selling for 7.5k. I wanna spend 8k more....and I dont see ever getting 19k for my 2nd gen.

So I am going to dump my money into a 3rd gen...I think its a better over all inverstent that I could sell and get some of my money back.

Comitatus 06-15-07 02:21 PM

If I counted...I would cry.

I have most of my receipts in a box though, so whenever I end up selling it, the buyer will know what an amazing deal they got...

SpeedOfLife 06-15-07 02:26 PM

I love the FC. I'll do whatever I can to not sell mine.

there is little difference in the modification aspect of FC vs FD, stock FDs hold their value better than most modded FDs do unlike stock FCs. you just can never expect to get much out of the money you dump into a car, you are better of putting it completely back to stock and selling the parts induvidually.

Yup. That's why it's a good idea to keep all your receipts, get it rated and have an agreed value policy as was mentioned earlier, and enjoy it for what it is. If you are seriously thinking about buying a car for resale value, buy an accord and keep it stock. My Mother-in-Law, I love her to death, but everyonce and a while she will tease me about, 'that damn thing,' 'silly rotary' whatever, and my Father-in-Law, who gets it, defends me saying pretty much, back off, it's a hobby, it's supposed to be fun, etc etc etc. I'm sorry but after 10 years with the same FC, to look at it as anything else is foolish.... just my $.02...

& yes, I put miles on the car and plan on driving her from CT to Irvine for 7S10 :icon_tup:

EDIT: Another good way to look at it is as a canvas, or a learning experience. I leaned how to weld becuase I needed some parts that were just not available, so I bought a TIG and learned how to use it. The paint was old and faded so my wife bought me an air-compressor (after I talked her out of paying to have her painted) and I learned bodywork and painting. A few panels took 2 or 3 tries but the finished product gets alot of compliments. I am NOT one to judge my own work but people have come up to me on more than one occasion to ask about the color and who painted the car. THAT feels good.

phoenix7 06-15-07 03:54 PM

donor TII(includes upgraded suspension and electronics)= $free.99 (it was my car so I won't include the value of THOSE parts on my CURRENT project)
SHELL=$700
Tools=~$300
clutch= ~300
Higgi TB elbow=$125
FMIC+pipes=$300
thermostat elbow=$106
sideskirts= $200
rear skirt=$100
Rear Sport wing=$25
Front bumper=$100
Yellow top batt. and cables for relocation=$160
Mazdaspeed engine mounts= i wanna say <$70
RB sways and links=$120
stock radiator= $70
3" RB turbo-back=$400
Wideband (LC-1)=$180
Fuel pump and injectors= $150
TOTAL= $3406  First time I've done the math.

On the way to my house THIS WEEK:
Rear Wing and Front lip=$300
Custom secret part you will not see or hear about until the body work is done=$300
Block-off plates= $26
Total=$626

Within the next two weeks:
S5 BNR stage 1 turbo= $560
FCD=$16 DIY
E-fan install= $FREE.99

By the end of summer:
Body work and paint= $??? I'm doing it with my friend so I don't know yet but I'm trying to do it all for under $1K at his shop.
Custom FG dashboard= <$150 in material
Vented hood= $450 shipped

By NEXT year:
Completely NEW interior (boots, knobs, seats,Steering wheel, pedals, remove sound deadening and re-install the carpet

RX8 seats for DD and ONE Momo racing seat for track-days

4 or 6pt. roll cage

Powder coat my rims, UIM/LIM and IC pipes

custom Griffin racing radiator

I've been working on this project for over 3 years now. Between looking on 2-3 forums, craigslist, my friends and other forum members I've gotten some really good deals on some sweet parts. I did the math for the first time today and it surprises me. Mostly because I didn't think I had spent so much $$ on the car but at the same time I feel good that I have honestly found some great deals. Because the parts have been sourced slowly and patiently it hasn't affected me much but it's amazing how everything adds up AND I'm not including GAS, Oil, Brakes, other Fluids, tickets!!!, replacement parts from thefts (yes, plural) and the occasional tire replacements.

By the time I'm done I hope to have a nice 300HP daily driven FC that NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN before (whether you like it is ANOTHER STORY) but I know you have not seen a car like mine no matter how many FCs you have seen anywhere. I have taken plenty of pics from the beginning and I will post everything in one thread once it is done.:icon_no2: Seems like a lot of money, but on the bright side it COULD have been more.

BTW this does not include my Current DD NA which is going to Paint next week! The NA is almost done, but i don't wanna do any more math . :shocking:

shogunxp 07-17-07 04:40 PM

im close to ~$4,600 for just rebuild and regular maintenance and overall tune up.
my first mod was suspension (tokico HP's w/ Tanabe GF210; front and rear strut brace) now it sums up to about $5000+ just for that...lol

package 07-17-07 04:51 PM

easy $10.000 but i bought the car new in 91. Think i will never stop spending on it

Building cars in usa has to be alooot cheaper. I dont wanna say how much ive spent the past four years!

fonzi581 02-20-08 08:00 AM

Ive got a lil over $8k in my convertible. I still havent started body work and the engine is almost completely stock. I've got a drawer full of reciepts though. Almost everyone of them is from the dealership.

Hmm, off hand I'm somewhere around 15-20k including past engines...

Still need a few more things for it as well...

I added up all the stuff I could think of off the top of my head a week or so ago.. I'm sure I've got over 6k in it not including the price of the car. I haven't even done any major overhauling except for the suspension.. just been fixing a ton of little stuff. I've only owned the car for 2.5 years!

$9900 total, still needs paint and body work :(

ericgrau 02-20-08 02:55 PM

The important thing is that you keep track of it and remember that all this money is basically going into entertainment. You'll never see the money again, even if you sell the car. But what you do have is your car.

I'm up to $5000 maybe: repairs, mods and original purchase price. About $1500 more planned, then I'm done. Just doing suspension, exhaust, some fancy oil system stuff and that's pretty much it.

Fuck yea.

Brand new 4 Piston Calipers
Brand New Rear Calipers

RB header (not installed yet. Trying to decide on a Cat-Back)

New Bonez High Flow Catalytic Converter
New sensors all around
K&N cone

If you add audio in there add about 2,000.
PPI A1200 "Art Series" Amplifier

2, 12" PPI PRO Flat Piston Subwoofers
PPI crossover
PPI coaxials all around.

The same for the Vert.. about 800 bucks.

10aeRX7 02-20-08 04:21 PM

HAHAHA! I just decided to get my own. Helped BoostedFc3s bleed his brakes tonite so that mine can go into the garage tomorrow. Needs some maintenence. (Can't be bad when your honey-do list includes working on your wife's fc.) And bonus: I'm using some of the parts he's already upgraded. Certainly haven't spent as much as you guys, but feeling that car pull when the turbo spools, I can see where this is going, and I like it. :naughty:

Andy87t2 02-21-08 12:06 AM

I'm at about $5300 including the $4400 i spent on the car( I picked up the car exactly one week again) Before i even picked up the car i had already ordered a wideband for it. By the time the year is over i'm sure i'll be around $7k. No stock parts realy need replacing, so it'll be all upgrades. its worth it!
$4400 88 turbo 2 W/ newly rebuilt street ported motor
$100 s5 bumpers(not installing until i can afford paint)
$250 Act street performance clutch kit.
$350 Innovate Lm-1 wideband.
$120 Cheap cd player(car had no radio when i bought it)
$50 Forge dual piston BOV

ZumspdRX-7 should post his parts list, its in his fs thread if you can find it(its nuts) If i remember correctly he has over $40k in receipts for this FD. What i think is remarkable is that Rick is only my age(21ish). I'm not even sure if i've earned $40k ever, let alone to spend on my car. haha.

JYM 02-21-08 01:56 AM

$6500 – 1989 TII with mods
$240 – 2 Kumho Ecsta MX 225/45 R17 tires
$800 – 4 BBS Stern wheels, 17x8 +42mm and 17x9 +42mm, from Japan
$50 – Driver side lower control arm and sway bar end link
$610 – Labor to install above mentioned control arm, labor to install a rack and pinion, cost of used rack and pinion, cost of new clutch slave cylinder and installation of clutch slave
$56 – Flex-a-lite thermostatic electric fan controller
$51 – 4 pairs of speed bleeders
$140 – New Starter
$33 – Pair of Sylvania Silverstar H6054ST
+Miscellaneous items that I won't list but have been accounted for
Total: $8734

Getting sub-par mileage, being fearful of needing a rebuild, and the moments you have with your car... priceless.
