i was just wondering if anybody knew the weights of all the rims that FC's came with. im getting a TII next week and just wanted to kno how much the rims weigh its the 87' TII wheels. im tinkin of putting vert rims on it until i get other rims.

wow im definently gettin vert rims. now another question. will putting on smaller rims affect the speedo accuracy? or cause any problems at all?

 

yea if anyone could post a link to that miata site that had the wheel/tire calculator for speed accuracy, id appreciate it. cant find it in my bookmarks.

 

Damm--them are some real heavy rims. The stock GSL-SE FB rims are about 13 lbs each--part of the reason I stuck with the stock rims.

Reducing the rim weight on your T2 would have a very positive effect on acceleration.

Sounds like you T2 guys could get some better performance by using lighter rims.

 

thats because the Stock GSL-SE wheels are only 14x6, instead of a real size like 16x7

 

So 2" more diameter gives almost double the weight. Let's just admit the T2 rims are on the heavy side.

I looked for quite a few 16" rims and most where in the 18 lb range, some as low as 15 lbs. Maybe in 87 that was the best they could do for 16" rims.

Actually part of the reason is the GSL-SE rims are a real good, all aluminum design--seems like Mazda got that one right.

But yea, I would like to have a bigger diameter than 14's.

hell anyone can make a 14x6 wheel only weigh 15 lbs, I would expect half that...

But who would want such a tiny wheel??? You can not put any real meat on it.

Even the 14x6 on the Base model and SE and Luxury coupe was lighter than the GSL-SE wheel, well alone the 15x6.5 vert wheel weighing only 11 lbs.

And actually for cast wheels a 16x7 weighing 25 lbs is a little heavy, but not out of the ball park.

I think you'll have to go forged or high alloy (like the FD wheels) to get a 15 lbs on that size wheel.

So what you are doing is compairing apples to oranges. You can not possibly consider a 14x6 wheel in the same ballpark as a 16x7 or even 16x8 wheel.

Yeah I can see that all day at the local tire shop... kids coming in with their moeny asking for tiny 14x6 wheels instead of a 16 or 17 wheel, because a 14x6 is so much lighter.

 

not necessarily, as long as you get tires with the same over all circumference it would'nt change your speedo accuracy

 

We did in 89-91 and they weigh 17 lbs

Larger diameter rims *in general* are heavier, but not all the time.
Yes, the Zenki S4 turbo rims ARE heavy.
By comparison, my GAB Sport 16" x 7" aftermarket rims are 15 lbs. each.
They are the same size as the stock rims, but are 10 lbs. lighter.
