How many wiper relays would I need?

So while it started torrential rain on my way back to work from lunch, my windshield wipers stopped working except in the LO position. I'm assuming it's the standard bad relay. I've read through the repair walkthrough, and I'm very comfortable with soldering/ordering from Mouser.

I really want to know if there's a way to tell how many relays I need based on my car model, without disassembling the relay. This is my DD and I can't really afford to not have windshield wipers until I can get the new parts and these things are like $5 a piece.

For the record, I have a 1990 GXL.

When the wipers only work on LO, you need to replace this guy on the right.

Alright, cool. So I would only need to replace the one?

And the Omron G6C-2117P-US-DC12 is the correct replacement?

I was having the exact same problem as you are having, and I only had to replace that one on the right.

Yes, I believe so. Don't forget that the picture I posted shows the switch after part of the casing was removed to expose the relay.

Low position is the white relay. Relay 2

Intermittent and High use the right relay (relay 1)

Meaning that it does not control LO operations.

Ah, yeah, I mis-understood your post. I have edited out my mistake. Somehow I read it that you were telling him to replace relay 1 when the issue was no low setting.

Anyway

You have three settings.

Intermittent,

Low,

High.

Relay one (the one on the right in your hacked up switch picture) controls the Intermittent and High positions.

Relay 2 (the one on the left in your hacked up switch picture) controls the Low setting.

If your wipers do not work in the low position, you replace relay 2

If your wipers don't work in the intermittent or high position, you replace relay 1

And don't hack that much plastic from the housing. Remember that plastic supports the circuit board and too much removed will result in the housing flexing and the board failing.

Alright, good. I thought I was losing my mind for a second since I ordered relay #2 from you to fix this exact problem. I'll make my responses a little more thorough next time.

And that pic that I posted came from rotorwiki; I did a little better job than whoever did this one.
