How to make exhaust quiet?

How to make exhaust quiet?
I have straight pipes right now, came with the car and I keep getting complaints and pulled over for it being to loud. Is there anyway I can keep the free(ish) flow and make it quiet? I don't have enough money for RB setup, I was thinking more cut and weld something or other.

Blow your engine..it will be silent until you can rebuild it!!!
Then your neighbors will love you, introduce you to their Sexy Daughter,Babs!
You and BABS have 6 kids. But then you hit the booze, because she is seeing Guido the pizza delivery guy...lose your job and have sell the RX7 to pay rent ..and live a Complete Crap RX7-less Life....forever...
OR get rid of the straight pipe Noise maker and put a RB presilencer and muffler on it!!
I like #2 myself but I would like to see BABS In bikini..so send PICS!...lol!

But yeah that's what I was thinking, it has mufflers and what appears to be some sort of resonator but no cats.

Yep! Watch your local craigslist and post a WTB on there and here for it.
The RB catback is more important than the presilencer. I had the stock catback and an RB header/presilencer, but it was annoying [very buzzy]. I really wish I'd gotten the catback first..

On a non turbocharged engine, you need some sort of back pressure. It's a misconception to think bigger is better. If you have say a 3" straight pipes, there is no velocity created .
This is why you don't have power low end .
Think of a small exhaust pipe and a large exhausrt pipe. which has faster exhaust puilses? The small one.
On a turbocharged engine, bigger is better to a point.
You can't go too small but you definately cannot go to big.

Too big of an exhaust pipe causes a pumping loss due to the EGV being low. Not only that, on an NA engine, you'll lose any scavenging effect you may have.
****, even mazdatrix says 2.5 inch pipe is the absolute biggest you'd ever need for an NA 13b.

So you aren't trying to create backpressure, you are trying to create velocity. But backpressure is sometimes an undesirable consequence of sizing pipes to create velocity.
I'd suspect in this case there isn't much low end due to non-functional aux ports. Wired open because of the exhaust.
To answer the OP, a fairly inexpensive quiet NA exhaust can be created. I would suggest two Vibrant Ultra-Quiet resonators, a Vibrant bottle style resonator, and then a good muffler. A straight through muffler will tend to be VERY loud but an offset muffler will help tremendously.

This is a common misunderstanding. You don't want any kind of backpressure (except if you have to actuate the aux ports). The higher velocity you can get in the pipes, the more you can draw out the gasses from the engine, and the more volume there will be to fill on the intake stroke. Either because the chamber isn't full of exhaust or ideally is somewhat at a vacuum (especially when there is intake/exhaust overlap) so that the AF mixture is drawn in.

Not even close. Especially if the FC has a header. Even more so with a HBP, and a square exhaust port.

This. I have a racing beat catback on my FC and its too quiet for my taste! haha I would suggest me selling it to you but locals in my area have first dibs.. if our looking for a quiet yet still sporty tone, I highly recommend the RB catback. looks great as well.
