stick a breaker bar on the frame, and kick the starter over a few times.

Just make sure its facing the right way, lol.. Keep the clutch depressed while you're working on it also. http://mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm

In that case, lock the flywheel down, however you need to do it, and put a 1/2" breaker bar on the front bolt (righty tighty, lefty loosy), and jump on the SOB. I had to bolt a 1X4 back there on the flywheel too, to keep the motor from moving while I was-a jumping, lol...

That must be a pretty weak impact, or it's going in the wrong direction. An imapct should have no trouble zipping that thing off. Air or electric?

WOAH!!! Don't heat it up. BTW Don't remove it until you know about the bearing that will drop out of place when you take it off. Do a search on it and read up before removing it.
Edit: Read this ASAP http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm

much better idea that heating. heating can make the metal do many many bad things. like shatter, expand, and other bad bad things.

personally i had no problem getting that off with a breaker bar but it was the flywheel nut that i had to heat up then jump on it and busted my *** when i thought i broke th ebreaker bar cuz i had a big pipe on the breaker bar for more leverage and it sounded like i tbroke the bar but after that i let it cool and hand loosened the massive nut. also there were like 2-3 bolts on the entire engine that i counlt break loose then untighten by hand i kinda liked that made it verry easy. my dad was completly supprised that the exhaust manifold bolts to the pipe came off like butter he was telling me that was almost unheard of. on a 87 but then again i have near zero rust on the car at all. i have more rust on the inside than i do on the outside including the bottom and everythign under there.

are we talking about the eccentric shaft bolt, the one thats like 3/4 inch or so (don't remember the metric)? if so...its a freakin bitch...i couldn't get it off with my snap on impact wrench for the life of me, its on a bad engine and i still haven't taken the engine apart further than the rear rotor because of this.
